A man who was found dead in a hot tub at Club San Diego on Dec. 30 has been identified as 42-year-old Scott Alan Wood, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

San Diego Police Sgt. Jim Schorr told the San Diego Union-Tribune following the incident that Wood’s body had been under water for “quite some time” after a patron got into the hot tub and proceeded to step on his body.

Schorr told the Gay & Lesbian Times that the case had been turned over to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office after an SDPD investigation determined there was no suspicious activity leading to Wood’s death.

The County Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy has been performed and a final toxicology report would determine if other factors were involved in the death.

Wood’s body was identified in January and his name was later released to the Gay & Lesbian Times. The toxicology report scheduled to be released March 30, however, is still pending. According to the County Medical Examiner’s Office operations administrator Rick Poggemeyer, the final toxicology report has not been completed due to a significant increase in cases during the last three months, in addition to being short one doctor.

Once the autopsy report has been completed, the toxicology report will be generated, he said.

Poggemeyer said Wood’s death certificate lists coronary atherosclerosis, a heart condition, and a seizure disorder under the “other significant conditions” section.

The County Medical Examiner’s Office said Wood was found unresponsive at Club San Diego and that the cause of death was officially ruled an accidental drowning.

Paramedics arrived at Club San Diego before attempts to resuscitate Wood were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at Scripps Mercy Hospital at 4:42 a.m. on Dec. 30.

Club San Diego owner Darl Edwards told the Gay & Lesbian Times he was not present at the club when the death occurred, and that he had no knowledge concerning any of the details surrounding the death.
