Phil’s BBQ Outlaws take second place in Phoenix tournament
Published Thursday, 20-Apr-2006 in issue 956
During the weekend of April 7-9, a record turnout of 95 teams from across the country met in Phoenix for the annual Saguaro Cactus Cup softball tournament, where Phil’s BBQ Outlaws took second place in the Open C Division.
After playing eight continual games on April 9, the Outlaws met the L.A. Bulldogs in the championship game. The two teams gave the crowd a close game that came down to the bottom of the seventh inning, where the Bulldogs came back to beat the Outlaws 12-11.
The Outlaws played a total of 13 games over the weekend, and are a new C team this year with a majority of the core group having played together for six years or more.
Both Outlaws coaches said the team performed above anyone’s expectations, and were reminded on the next day that Tylenol, ace bandages and physical therapy are a softball player’s best friends.
The Outlaws expressed their thanks to the tournament husbands that endured a long weekend of cheering and getting water, and also special thanks to the Outlaws’ sister team, the Lumberjacks, for their support on April 9.
