Probe continues into phone message accusing Arizona governor of gay agenda
Governor says anonymous call violated state law

PHOENIX (AP) — An investigation is ongoing into an anonymous message phoned to homes across the state of Arizona during that state’s gubernatorial race last year.
The message accused then-Democratic gubernatorial candidate Janet Napolitano of pushing a pro-gay agenda.
Napolitano, who narrowly won the race, had maintained the message violated state law because it didn’t identify who paid for it.
Authorities investigating the complaint declined to say whether they have found who was responsible for the message.
“I can’t tell you what’s been determined or not,” said Dan Benavidez, a spokesperson for the Pima County Attorney’s Office.
The Pima County Attorney’s Office handled the complaint because Napolitano’s job then as the state’s attorney general would have created a conflict of interest.
“We’re going to let the investigation run its course,” said Paul Allvin, spokesperson for the governor.
In the message, a woman complained that Napolitano’s politics prevented the woman from getting her child back from a gay couple who adopted the baby, according to a transcript that the Napolitano campaign provided.
The message went to homes across the state, the campaign said.
Napolitano called the message false and bigoted.
Similarly, then-Republican gubernatorial candidate Matt Salmon and the state GOP party condemned the message and said they had nothing to do with it.
