Exhibit opening: “Body Ornamentation: Artistic Representations of Self” runs until May 27 at the Museum of Man and focuses on the many different types of body art in a variety of cultures around the world. Documentary videos and extensive photo murals of tattoos and piercing are included. Admission is $6. Located in Balboa Park, the museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (619) 239-2001.
Carmen and The Seasons: The ballet is a condensed version of the popular opera Carmen, with music by Georges Bizet, combined with Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, inspired by the music to express the seasons through dance. The show takes place on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 to $42. On Saturday night, priority seating is offered with an onstage champagne reception for $60 per person. Art opening: Meet expressionist painter Demarcona and view her work at an exhibition opening reception from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Sharp Gallery, located at 3807 Ray Street in North Park. Her show is up until June 8 and is part of Ray at Night, San Diego’s largest monthly art event held the second Saturday of each month. Multiple galleries stay open late, featuring live music, beverages and refreshments. The free event is located on Ray Street between University Avenue and North Park Way.
Coffee Talk: For women who prefer to “think outside the bar,” a coffee talk event at Diedrich’s Coffee takes place from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The event is part of Women’s Out & About in San Diego, a new community social group looking to bring women of all backgrounds together for social events and gatherings. Soul of a Young Girl: The Eveoke Dance Theatre presents dances inspired by The Diary of Anne Frank, which bring to life the personalities Frank wrote about and the feelings she experienced locked up in the Secret Annex, at the Tenth Avenue Theatre. The show runs May 13-June 4. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 to $25. Baja Lobster Tour: The Baja Lobster Tour will transport you and your guests to the scenic cities of Rosarito Beach and Puerto Nuevo. Jewish Music Festival: Zina Schiff, a Heifetz prodigy violinist, performs a program modeled after recitals in Terezin with selections from the classics and Jewish composers. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, located at 4126 Executive Dr. in La Jolla. As an accompaniment, San Diego residents Eve Gerstle, Lilli Greenberg and Ruth Sachs share memories of how they arrived, survived and were affected by Nazi rule. Tickets are $15 to $19. Jamie Cullum: The self-taught British pianist and singer-songwriter takes the stage at the House of Blues playing contemporary jazz. His major-label debut album, Twentysomething, made him a star in the U.K., and he is gaining ground in the U.S. with his most recent release, Catching Tales. Raul Midon opens. Poetry and Art: The quarterly event at the San Diego Art Institute features special guest performers reg e gaines (author, playwright and director) and San Diego poets Rudy Francisco, Viet Mai, Whitney Lawrence, Brian DeBenedictus and Sunflower Dubois. The poets will stage a mock slam, battling it out in metaphors and rhythms between the paintings. Original artwork will be on exhibit by Visual Graffiti, along with other live music and food. Norman, Is That You?: This play is story of a drycleaner from Dayton, Ohio, who arrives in New York to visit his adult son, Norman, after his wife runs off with his brother. Instead of the solace he is expecting, he finds more turmoil when he meets Norman’s flamboyant, elitist roommate Garson Hobart. The play runs until June 4 at the Lamplighters Theatre in La Mesa.
