The Bourbon Street Hurricanes were looking to extend their winning streak to three games, after back-to-back wins against the Knights and the Longhorns, but in the end they weren’t able to maintain their momentum and fell to the league-leading Martinis Above Fourth Eagles 27-20 on May 13 in a San Diego American Flag Football game.
Within the first minute, the Hurricanes had received the kick, made three plays and scored. Ron Addeo caught the kick and ran the ball to the 29-yard line. Rudy Babauta then caught a short pass for the first down at the 38-yard line. Quarterback Abe Velarde threw a long bomb that was caught by Daniel Muñoz for the first score of the game. The score was 7-0 after Babauta caught the short pass for the extra point.
The Eagles jumped off the 20-yard line with a short pass down the center to Jason Hefley. Jason Wang caught a short pass at the 32-yard line, followed by a pass to Brandon Culley for the first down. Wang caught the next pass and avoided two tackles before being stopped at the 19-yard line for a first down. Culley caught a pass down the center for a 9-yard gain and the second down. H.T. Bennett caught a short pass and ran down the middle for the first score for the Eagles. The score was tied 7-7 after Bennett caught the short flick pass for the extra point.
After the Hurricanes turned the ball over on downs, the Eagles took over and Bennett caught a short flick pass and ran to the 32-yard line. The Hurricanes stepped up their rushing and Emer Pacieb sacked the Eagles’ quarterback for a 1-yard loss. Hefley caught a pass down the sidelines for a first down at the 15-yard line. The Hurricanes again stepped up the pressure and forced the Eagles’ quarterback to throw the ball away, narrowly avoiding the sack. Culley then caught a medium pass at the 3-yard line for first and goal for the Eagles. A few plays later, Wang caught the ball in the corner of the end zone for the Eagles’ second score to lead 13-7 after a failed conversion attempt.
The Hurricanes scored on their next possession when Todd Refling caught a long pass for the first down at the 22-yard line. Muñoz then caught a long bomb for the Hurricanes’ second score and a 14-13 lead after the Hurricanes’ Addeo caught the pass for the extra point.
The Eagles regained the lead 21-14 after a few plays. Hefley caught a pass and ran to the 10-yard line for the first down. Culley then caught a pass for the Eagles’ third score and Hefley caught a pass for a 2-point conversion.
Determined to catch up, the Hurricanes’ defense jumped out of the gate with a vengeance. Muñoz blocked a pass for the second down. The Eagles’ Wang caught the ball for the first down at the 31-yard line. Strong defense by the Hurricanes resulted in three missed passes and almost an interception before the Eagles were forced to kick from the 31-yard line and turn the ball back over to the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes’ Daniel Muñoz carries the ball in their 27-20 loss to the Eagles on May 13.
After the Hurricanes could not put any offensive plays together to make any ground during their next possession, the Eagles’ Jim Giacobbe caught a short flick pass and ran to the 40-yard line for a first down. Strong defense by the Hurricanes blocked the next pass for a second and 10. Pressure on the Eagles’ quarterback forced some evasion, but he managed to get the ball off and it was caught by Culley for a touchdown and a 27-14 lead after a missed conversion attempt.
During the next possession, the Eagles’ defense stepped up and blocked a pass, resulting in a fourth-down situation. The Hurricanes went for it but missed, resulting in another turnover on the 18-yard line.
Wanting to pad their 13-point lead, the Eagles tried to score on their next possession but strong defense by the Hurricanes caused the Eagles to punt on fourth down.
On the next possession, Muñoz returned the kick, but dropped it at the 36-yard line. The Eagles stepped up their defense again, forced two missed passes and put additional pressure on the Hurricanes’ quarterback. This resulted in an interception, but it was called back due to a penalty. Shon Fields then caught a medium pass and ran past three defenders for the Hurricanes’ third score, bringing the score to 27-20 after a failed conversion attempt.
In the second game of the day, the Gators beat the Longhorns 41-20, moving them up to third place with 4-3 record. The win also earned them a seeding in the championships. The Longhorns remain at the bottom of the standings with a 1-6 record for the season.
In the final game, the Knights beat the Gladiators 24-13, moving them up to second place at 5-2 and secured a seeding in the championships. The Gladiators slip to fourth place at 3-4.
Two weeks remain before the championships on June 10.
