It may be “May gray” outside, but there is still plenty going on in the women’s community this month!
First off, did you know that there is a show based on lesbian pulp fiction showing at the Diversionary Theatre through June 11? Moxie Theatre and Diversionary Theatre join forces to present Patricia Kane’s comedy with music, entitled Pulp!. Fueled by heat, hormones and whiskey, Pulp! is smart, sexy and all that jazz, with delicious characters and period music, so make sure to check it out! This is a great opportunity to support Moxie Theatre, whose mission is “to expand the idea of what is feminine by using the intimate art of theater to create more diverse and honest female images.” We are blessed to have a feminist theater company right here in San Diego, so support it! The Diversionary/Moxie co-production is co-directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and Jason Southerland, and features Jo Anne Glover, Jessica John, Terri Park, Leigh Scarritt and Jennifer Eve Thorn. Showtimes include: Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., Sundays at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m., and Monday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets prices are $27 general admission, $23 for seniors, students and military, and there are $9 student rush tickets available one hour prior to curtain. For more information, call the box office at (619) 220-0097. Tickets are also on sale at Obelisk Bookstore.
In other news, there is a new women’s social club, Women Out ’n’ About in S.D., hitting the scene in San Diego. The group invites you to participate in dinners, dances, sporting events, concerts, plays and more. The group can be found on the Web at www.womenoutnaboutsd.com. According to the Web site, Women Out ’n’ About was founded by three friends who grew concerned after witnessing the closing of many of San Diego’s lesbian-owned businesses catering to women. In an effort to revitalize the women’s community and give women the chance to meet and mingle, the group was born. If you’d like to get involved, don’t miss the Women’s Stroll through Balboa Park, taking place Sunday, May 28, at 10:00 a.m. Just grab your morning cup of joe and head to the meeting spot at Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street, by the dog park. Four-legged friends are welcome, as long as they are on a leash and play well with others! For more info, e-mail info@womenoutnaboutsd.com.
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 6, at 7:00 p.m. when the Women’s Resource Center will host a mixer featuring the “who’s who” of the LGBT women’s community. This event will feature the many “Cool Women” who have been highlighted during the Coffee and Conversation with Cool Women Series. Everyone is invited to mingle, de-stress and enjoy refreshments. For more information, contact Claudia Lucero at clucero@thecentersd.org.

In other Women’s Resource Center news, Expression Lounge will take place every other month and will feature music, refreshments and a unique lounge atmosphere. Exact dates are still to be announced. Artists of all types are encouraged to submit photographs, slides, sketches, written descriptions of work, DVDs, CDs or any other example/representation of artwork, with a single paragraph explanation (do not turn in actual artwork). To apply, mail submissions to P.O. Box 3357, San Diego, CA 92163, or send small files to clucero@thecentersd.org. This is a great opportunity to have your work shown to the public!
Another No Name Art Show and Party will take place on Saturday, June 10, at the Yale Lofts (1115 F St., downtown). This is a great spot to support local artists, so mark your calendars now! DJ Nicklebag will spin ’80s and more all night. A $2 donation is requested. For available art space, call Franki and Leslie at (619) 920-4883.
Pride season officially kicks off this weekend, with Long Beach Pride taking place May 20-21. This year, the city of Long Beach has requested that the Pride parade begin earlier, and the parade is stepping off at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Make a note of this change!
With San Diego LGBT Pride just around the corner, the sixth annual Victory Fund Women’s Pride Brunch will take place immediately before the San Diego Pride parade on Saturday, July 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The location is still being finalized, but seating will be limited. For tickets, visit www.victoryfund.org.

What should also be on your Pride radar is the new Women’s Space premiering at this year’s festival. The Women’s Space will feature two days of entertainment, including girl bands, hip-hop artists, dance, percussion, poetry and more. Already scheduled to perform are Angie Evans, DropJoy, Lauren DeRose, MC Flow, Jianda, Maria Ayala and Terra Naomi, but stay tuned for more updates. The Women’s Space should be a great spot to meet up with friends, hang out and build community, so don’t forget to swing by in between your stops at the beer garden!
In my opinion, summer is synonymous with great concerts, so here are a few that may be of interest to you: Fiona Apple returns to San Diego on Friday, June 23, at the Open Air Theater on the SDSU campus. Radiohead will do a two-night run at Bayside Concerts with Viejas, on Monday, June 26, and Tuesday, June 27, and I am definitely getting tickets to one of those shows! Don’t miss this chance to see one of the most incredible bands ever – they don’t tour all that often. Also of interest to some of you lesbos is Melissa Etheridge, who will be performing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Tuesday, June 27. Show up and wish her a hearty congrats on her ever-growing family!
In ladies’ club news, Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner, prompting celebrations and barbecues at many of your favorite spots. Six Degrees will kick off the holiday weekend on Friday, May 26, with a performance by the S.D. Kings Club at 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, May 27, DJ Moody will start spinning at 9:00 p.m., and there will be drink specials all night. On Sunday, May 28, the Six will host a wet T-shirt contest with $100 going to the winner.
Bad Kitties at Numbers will celebrate Memorial Day on Friday, May 26, with a party featuring special guest DJ Gigi. DJ Kiki will spin in the Liquid Lounge. Taste the shot specials all night long!

’Tis the season for wet T-shirt contests!
Bourbon Street is the place to be this Sunday, May 21, when Lavender Lens and Bourbon Street present Amore, an afternoon of matchmaking and kissing. If you’re single, jump in on the speed-dating session and find your next girlfriend. If you’re already hitched, jump in on the kissing contest! Sign-up starts at 3:30 pm. Also, don’t forget that Bourbon Street is the place to be on Friday nights for ladies happy hour and $3 martinis (yum!) from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Stick around for the weekly wet T-shirt contest, which takes place at 7:00 p.m. sharp, and win $150 in cash and prizes.
And don’t forget Game Girl, the Friday night women’s party at Bacchus House. This is a great place to go for affordable drinks and great music, and don’t miss the Latinas Drag Kings, who will hit the stage at Game Girl on Friday, June 2, at 10:00 p.m.
That’s it on my end for the month of May, ladies. Please send summer announcements and events my way by e-mailing queerabby@hotmail.com. See you in June, when Pride season will already be bumpin’!
