Fortunately, the Gay & Lesbian Times has done the hard part for you and compiled a directory of the summer’s hottest events, attractions and must-have action available in Southern California and beyond.

Los Angeles Pride

West Hollywood Park, West Hollywood
Christopher Street West has set an agenda to express love, to be treated as equals unconditionally and to live with pride. With the theme “Our Agenda: Love, Equality, Pride,” Los Angeles Pride combines a weekend festival in West Hollywood Park and a Sunday parade along Santa Monica Boulevard.
The Pride parade starts at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, winding along Santa Monica Boulevard, from Crescent Heights Boulevard onto Robertson Boulevard. Performers at the festival include Bow Wow Wow, Niki Haris, CeCe Peniston, Berlin, Taylor Dayne and The Bangles, just to name a few. Tickets are already on sale online (and at about half a dozen locations throughout Los Angeles) for $15 a day.

Pachanga de Orgullo: Latin Pride music fest

Centro Cultural de la Raza in Balboa Park
The Center’s Latino Services presents Pachanga de Orgullo, a GLBT Latin Pride music festival. The fifth annual festival takes place from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight at the Centro Cultural de la Raza, located in Balboa Park. Celebrate the diversity of the Latino/a community while listening to the music of The B-Side Players and other live bands, dancing to the sounds of DJ El Heavy spinning salsa, reggaeton and other Latin dance music, and enjoying authentic Mexican food, beer and tequila from Corazon de Agave.
Tickets are limited and are currently on sale for $15. All proceeds from the event benefit The Center’s Latino/a Services Program.

Women take to the streets for lesbian visibility for the 12th annual Los Angeles Dyke March. The aim is to dispel myths about lesbians and to unite the community in a lesbian-only space. The evening event includes a rally and a march.

Jennifer Beals, from Showtime’s “The L Word,” has been announced as the celebrity grand marshal for 2006 and will ride in the parade down Market Street during San Francisco’s Pride. The festival takes place at the Civic Center both days, with the parade on Market Street starting at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

San Franciscans celebrate their “Two Thousand and Sex” Dyke March with an afternoon rally and march. Details are still being confirmed, but a lineup of entertainers has already been announced that includes singer Karen Williams and comedian Marga Gomez.

Hillcrest and Balboa Park
The year’s Pride celebration is themed “Equal Rights! No Turning Back!” Now in its 32nd year, Pride includes a Spirit of Stonewall Rally on Friday, a mile-long parade on Saturday, a two-day festival in Balboa Park and various arts events and Pride parties in the weeks prior.
There are many new items and expansions at this year’s local Pride event, including giant balloons in the parade, more than 70 performance groups performing on 10 stages at the festival, an Interfaith Pavilion, a Women’s Space and more.
Entertainment headliners include Tiffany and Deborah Gibson.

The City Heights Community Development Corporation presents the 14th annual City Heights International Village Celebration. The Hillcrest Youth Center’s Digital Media Project and Arco Iris Lounge/Colored Lenses Project present a Queer Youth Digital Media Conference from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Youth attendees deconstruct media, learn how they can create stories of their own and learn about youth media activism. The conference includes two breakout sessions and lunch. A highlight of the event is a documentary produced by GLBT youth of color through the Arco Iris Lounge/Colored Lenses Project. Shane Caya from the Transgender Law Center will give a presentation on important legal issues for the transgender community, from name/gender changes to marriage and family issues.

Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) presents Fiesta Del PAWS, an annual fund-raiser, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at an estate adjoining Balboa Park. This year’s masters of ceremonies will be NBC 7/39 news reporter Margaret Radford and FOX 6 news reporter Eric Collins. Award recipients Stefanie Powers and Joan Embery will be in attendance as well. The San Diego Humane Society will be on site with puppies, kittens, cats and dogs that are up for adoption.
PAWS is a grassroots, volunteer-driven organization providing low-income elderly, disabled and chronically-ill individuals with essential services that enable them to keep their companion animals in their homes.
Ticket prices range from $75 to $150.

Find a furry companion that will be loyal to you long after the summer flings have faded, at one of FOCAS’ (Friends of County Animal Shelters) Adoption Sundays in the Balboa Park. FOCAS has dozens of beautiful, healthy animals available for adoption one Sunday each month from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Adoption Sundays take place under the palm trees located at the first stop sign on President’s Way (at Pan American Way).
Dozens of cute ’n’ cuddly cats and dogs are looking for a loving home and a second chance at these regular adopt-a-pet events. Volunteers offer care advice and ensure pets are matched to the best parent(s). Donations are gratefully accepted.
