David Rubin for judge
Published Thursday, 25-May-2006 in issue 961
You can’t help but like David Rubin. After our brief chat with him about his recent endorsement by the San Diego Union-Tribune for the Office 49 judgeship, it’s obvious why he appeals to both conservatives and liberals alike. He’s candid, charming and intelligent, and with 20 years as a deputy district attorney and two recent successful high-profile cases under his belt, he has a proven track record that rivals his opponent’s, former district attorney Paul Pfingst.
The fact that Rubin is openly gay is secondary and only adds to his overall appeal. Having Rubin on the bench is an example to all, straight and gay alike, that members from our community can and will hold office in all levels and branches of government in San Diego.
Pfingst, on the other hand, can’t seem to slough off criticism he garnered during his final years as the district attorney, in which deputies from within the D.A.’s Office were vocal about their opposition to Pfingst and his management style. This later contributed to his defeat by our current district attorney, Bonnie Dumanis.
Rubin has been endorsed by the aforementioned Union-Tribune, Sheriff Bill Kolender, Dumanis, four of the five county supervisors, the San Diego Democratic Club, the Deputy Sheriffs Association, the police officers associations from San Diego and numerous other cities, and nearly 50 Superior Court judges.
Below is a recap of the Gay & Lesbian Times endorsements, with a few new additions. Cut this out and take it to the polls on Tuesday, June 6. A complete voter guide, including endorsements in every race and positions on the ballot initiatives, will appear next week in our San Diego News section.
