The San Diego Bulldogs Wrestling Club sent three wrestlers to compete at the Golden Gate Wrestling Memorial Day Tournament and Clinic held in San Francisco on May 28.

More than 50 wrestlers from across the country participated in the 21st annual tournament, which took place at the Mark Bingham Memorial Gymnasium and was organized the by the Golden Gate Wrestling Club.

In the 165-lb. weight class, the Bulldogs’ Gary Gerber placed second after pinning Ken Thomas of Los Angeles. Los Angeles’ Eddie Chen won the 165-lb. title.

“He [Gerber] was the only one of the Bulldogs that actually won by pin, and the only one to take a match to a second period,” Bulldogs coach Greg Lines said.

The Bulldogs’ David Omdahl placed fourth in the 165-lb. weight class after wrestling Thomas and Chen.

In the 145-lb. weight class, the Bulldogs’ Arik Pou placed third after competing against Ross Capdeville of San Francisco and Steve Pizzeli of Los Angeles. Capdeville won the 145-lb. title.

Lines said he was very proud of how the Bulldogs fared in this tournament based on their inexperience in tournament play.

“This was their first tournament,” Lines said. “They were all extremely nervous about competing because this was a big deal. There were a lot of people there.”

Seven Bulldogs members will compete at Gay Games VII in Chicago this July.
