Town hall meeting on Military Readiness Enhancement Act
The Center, Momentum San Diego and the San Diego LGBT Community Leadership Council will present a town hall meeting focused on military issues on Wednesday, June 28, at 6:00 p.m. This meeting will take place at The Center, located at 3909 Centre St.
A focus of the town hall will be the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, HR 1059. Introduced by Rep. Martin Meehan, D-Mass., this legislation would repeal the U.S. military’s current “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy so that lesbian, gay and bisexual service members would be able to serve openly.
The featured speakers will be local attorney Bridget Wilson, an advocate for LGB service members, and retired Colonel Stewart Bornhoft.
“This issue has particular significance here in San Diego since so many individuals from our community have been directly impacted by ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and the previous ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual people serving in the military,” said AJ Davis, director of public policy for The Center. “This town hall meeting is especially relevant given the current needs of the U.S. armed forces. Today, more people are becoming aware that it makes no sense to continue to uphold a discriminatory policy that keeps willing and able Americans from serving.”
The town hall event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact AJ Davis at (619) 692-2077 ext. 212 or e-mail adavis@thecentersd.org.
Assembly votes to provide services for GLBT elders
On June 1, the California Assembly passed the Older Californians Equality and Protection Act (AB 2920), a bill to ensure that the California Department of Aging accounts for the needs of GLBT seniors in its programs and services. The measure passed by a 48-32 vote, garnering support from the entire Democratic caucus.
“LGBT seniors should be able to take advantage of any government service that is available to all older Californians,” said Seth Kilbourn, Equality California political director. “The elder LGBT community has unique needs that should be considered in current and future state programs administered through the Department of Aging.”
Assemblymember Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, said California’s GLBT seniors deserve to live their lives with dignity and stability.
“AB 2920 will require the state to survey their unique needs so we can better address them with culturally competent and appropriate services,” he said.
Recent studies have called attention to the lack of culturally competent services for GLBT seniors. In areas ranging from housing to health care to relationship and asset protection, these individuals are vulnerable to multiple forms of discrimination and often have limited legal, medical and social resources.
