A year later, pumping party suspect still at large
Published Thursday, 15-Jun-2006 in issue 964
Nearly one year ago today, two transgender women suffered serious complications after being injected with silicone at a local “pumping party.” Patricio Gonzalez was rushed to the hospital after she experienced severe breathing problems, and died less than a month later at Scripps Mercy Hospital.
The San Diego Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Sammia “Angelica” Garcia-Gonzalez in connection with the case. Garcia-Gonzalez allegedly left the party, held in the 4000 block of Florida Street, shortly after the two women began experiencing breathing difficulties. Police believe Garcia-Gonzalez performed the procedures without a medical license.
Since the incident, Garcia-Gonzalez has been at large and is believed to have fled to Mexico. A few weeks ago, however, someone fitting Garcia-Gonzalez’s description was spotted at The Brass Rail. Recognizing Garcia-Gonzalez from a wanted poster police had dropped off last year, staff members placed a phone call to the police department. The suspect, who was with a male companion, was later picked up outside David’s Coffeehouse.
Homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney told the Gay & Lesbian Times that the woman identified outside David’s Coffeehouse was in fact not Garcia-Gonzalez and she is still at large.
Before this story takes on a life of its own, we wanted to make the community aware that the search for Garcia-Gonzalez is not over.
Garcia-Gonzalez, 39, from Lynwood, Los Angeles, is described as 5 feet 3 inches, weighing 165 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. Police said she was reportedly driving a red Chrysler PT Cruiser when in San Diego, and possibly injected several other people in the area with silicone that same weekend.
Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (888) 580-TIPS.
