Outfest to screen ‘Tar Heels and Short Skirts’
Outfest San Diego, San Diego’s annual GLBT film festival, will hold a benefit screening, Saturday, Aug. 23, at 8:00 p.m. The event will be held at Current Affairs Bookstore in North Park. The film will be Tar Heels and Short Skirts, a documentary focusing on the Miss USofA 2003 Pageant. The film includes interviews with pageant contestants before, during and after the festivities. The candid interviews are interspersed with some truly outrageous performances, providing an honest look at the glamorous, and oh-so-competitive world of drag pageants. Be prepared to have some Southern-style fun and see who becomes the true belle of the ball! The cost is just $5 and goes towards this year’s Outfest San Diego GLBT film festival (Sept. 25-28). Diversionary Theatre to open 10th season with ‘Love! Valour! Compassion!’
Ten years ago, Diversionary Theatre opened its doors at the then newly renovated 4545 Park Boulevard. During that decade, no show has been so requested as a revival of the Theatre’s 1997 production of Love! Valour! Compassion! by Terrence McNally. Originally staged by Sean Murray, the revival is being helmed by director Tim Irving.
Returning to the stage from the 1997 production are Dan Gruber, Joshua Harrell and Tim Irving, in a reprise of his classic performance as Buzz. Joining them will be Diversionary Associate Artist Manuel J. Fernandes, Dennis J. Scott, Vincent Smetana and Diversionary newcomer, Jeremiah M. Maestas.
“This is the perfect opening for our Anniversary Season,” said Diversionary’s executive director, Chuck Zito. “Ever since coming to San Diego two and one-half years ago, I have had more people ask for this play than any other.”
Previews of Love! Valour! Compassion! begin Aug. 22, 23, 24 and 27. The play officially runs Aug. 28 through Oct. 11. For more information, call (619) 220-0097.
