“If people saw how diverse we are – we’re not all just like Kevin Aviance, we’re a very diverse community, we have drag queens and feminine guys but we also have very masculine guys, people who are like Anderson Cooper, people who are incredibly strong and incredibly brave – I think it would change people’s minds. To enjoy the benefits from the gay movement and then basically lie just to make more money, I think it’s a disgrace. Shame on him. … Someone should push him out.”
Gay porn star Michael Lucas to Denver’s exp Magazine, June 23. Anderson Cooper has refused to discuss his sexual orientation, one way or the other, with interviewers.
“What the Republican elites really care about is making sure that as much money as possible flows into their bank accounts. To placate their base, they’re willing to make sympathetic noises about issues like abortion and gay marriage, but when push comes to shove they either don’t care very much about those issues, or, in many cases, they themselves hold liberal views on such matters. Conversely, what the Democratic elites really care about are cultural issues. They may cluck their tongues about the destruction of another labor union, but what they’re actually willing to fight for are things like liberal abortion laws and gay marriage. And, truth be told, they don’t find big tax cuts for the rich that distasteful, for reasons which are obvious when one considers that they come from the same economic class as their Republican counterparts. Hence we’ll soon be a nation in which the rich gay married couples will pay no estate taxes.”
University of Colorado law professor Paul Campos writing for the Scripps Howard News Service, June 27.
“It’s totally the best thing I have ever done in my life. It should be on my gravestone, ‘I came out.’ You have to keep telling people and reassuring them that life is going to be better. I’ve never met anyone who is out who didn’t think it was the best thing they ever did. It took me an awfully long time, and there were some people of my generation who have never come out. Look at Dirk Bogarde, the wonderful gay actor who couldn’t bring himself to say he was gay and died an unhappy man.”
Gay actor Sir Ian McKellen to London’s Pink Paper, June 15.
“Newt Gingrich leaving his second wife for a House staffer 23 years younger (while at the same time railing about morals) should be forever commemorated with a diorama at the as-yet-unbuilt Smithsonian Museum of Family-Values Hypocrisy, as should the quadruply married misadventures of pill popper Rush Limbaugh.”
Washington Post reporter Hank Stuever writing in the Seattle alternative weekly The Stranger, June 22.
“The strip [‘Dykes to Watch Out For’] is still really exciting to me. Especially at this point in history, as it [the U.S.] is dissolving into totalitarianism. I just feel like this country is insane. It is, seriously – we’re being ruled by psychopaths. The comic strip is just an outlet to vent my feelings about it.”
Cartoonist Alison Bechdel to Vancouver’s Xtra! West, June 8.
