The Center to host Digital Storytelling Showcase
The Center will host the Digital Storytelling Showcase on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at The Center, located at 3909 Centre St.
In 2004, The Center began to create specialized digital storytelling projects, including those focused on youth, marriage, women and people living with HIV/AIDS.
“By utilizing images from their own family histories, the participants in The Center’s Digital Media Project have created stories that will inspire and educate,” said Lindsay Sullivan, The Center’s manager of information technology and coordinator for these projects. “These stories are achingly beautiful, deeply moving and not to be missed.”

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence first-anniversary celebration
The San Diego chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will celebrate its first anniversary with a series of events taking place Friday through Sunday, Aug. 11-13.
An opening night party takes place at Bacchus House on Friday beginning at 9:00 p.m. Bacchus House is located at 3054 University Ave. in North Park.
On Saturday, a picnic begins at 3:00 p.m. at Trolley Barn Park, located a few blocks east of Park Boulevard on Adams Avenue. The picnic will be followed by the Veiling and Profession Ceremony and reception at Bourbon Street at 6:00 p.m. Bourbon Street is located at 4612 Park Blvd. in University Heights.
On Sunday, the Sisters will host a brunch at Martinis Above Fourth, located at 3940 Fourth Ave., Ste. 200 in Hillcrest, at 12:00 noon, which will include the Public Vows and House Ceremony and will be followed by a celebration party at Numbers at 6:00 p.m. Numbers is located at 3811 Park Blvd. in Hillcrest.

GSDBA receives national Chamber of the Year award
The Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA) was recently presented the 2006 Chamber of the Year award from the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce at the Montreal 2006 Out for Business International Business and Leadership Conference.
The conference drew participants from all over the world and tied into the International Conference on LGBT Human Rights and the 1st World Outgames. It was the largest global business event on record dedicated to expanding economic opportunities for the GLBT business community.
The award was presented to GSDBA executive director Joyce Marieb, who was joined by GSDBA associate director Shane Stahl and GSDBA board vice president Michelle Burkart,
“We are proud to have a leadership role in the LGBT business movement and the movement for equality,” Marieb said. “Montreal was an extraordinarily welcoming city, and being part of a conference with people from all over the globe, who are committed to advancing human rights, was an enriching and exhilarating experience.”

Mayor Sanders to participate in AIDS Walk San Diego
Mayor Jerry Sanders will participate in this year’s AIDS Walk San Diego festivities on Sunday. Oct. 1
The 17th annual AIDS Walk San Diego will take place in Balboa Park and is the largest one-day HIV/AIDS fund-raising event for San Diego County HIV/AIDS service organizations.
“It is my honor to join in this year’s AIDS Walk San Diego,” Mayor Jerry Sanders said. “In 2006, we marked the 25th anniversary of the first reported cases of AIDS. I believe it is more important than ever for San Diegans to understand the importance of the Walk. San Diego HIV/AIDS service providers, and the thousands of clients and families they serve, are counting on our support.”
Delores A. Jacobs, chief executive officer of The Center, said AIDS Walk organizers are grateful to have Mayor Sanders participate in AIDS Walk San Diego, which is a program of The Center. “We deeply appreciate Mayor Sanders’ ongoing commitment to improving the health and well-being of all San Diegans,” she said.

San Diego POZabilities to conduct singles social mixer
San Diego POZabilities (SDP), a social group for HIV-positive men, will conduct a singles social mixer on Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church, located at 4190 Front St. in Hillcrest.
SDP conducts a variety of social events for HIV-positive men, and is conducting the event to provide an opportunity for HIV-positive men interested in meeting other HIV-positive men for dating.
“Many HIV-positive guys are not into the bar scene or computer online personals,” a spokesperson for SDP said. “Some have become discouraged and even given up on the idea of dating because of the HIV issue. We anticipate conducting a series of social mixers where positive guys can meet, share some good conversation and perhaps make a date.”
Men of all ages are welcome. There is no charge to attend the mixer.
Parking at the church is free. Door prizes will be raffled, and beverages and light snacks will be provided.

Henry’s reopening to benefit the revitalization of North Park
Henry’s Farmers Market has teamed up with Ray at Night galleries for the grand reopening celebration of Henry’s Farmer’s Market’s North Park location at 4175 Park Blvd., which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 12.
The free event is a celebration of the North Park community and the revitalization efforts taking place throughout the community, and includes food, music, photography, ceramics, sculpture and paintings by Ray Street artists.
Henry’s will donate 5 percent of the store’s sales on Aug. 12 to the North Park Main Street Business Improvement District (BID) to show its commitment to local businesses in the North Park area. The North Park BID is a 501c6 organization dedicated to the business and residential improvement of North Park.
The newly remodeled Henry’s features a full-service deli, meat department, a gourmet Mediterranean olive bar and an open-air bakery. The remodel also includes the expansion of the vitamin, bulk and frozen-food departments, as well as new floors and paint throughout the store.
Nearby Ray Street features a dozen galleries and hosts Ray at Night on the second Saturday of every month. The free event takes place from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Ray Street between University Avenue and North Park Way. Multiple galleries stay open late, featuring live music, beverages and refreshments.
In addition to local artists, the Henry’s reopening celebration will also feature a jazz trio, a magician, a tarot card reader, a mime, and free food and beverage samples.

Talking about Tina
Talking about Tina is a support group for HIV-positive men who use crystal methamphetamine that meets Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the offices of Jewish Family Services, located at 2700 Adams Ave, Suite 101. A healthy meal will be served before the group meets at 6:00 p.m.
Talking about Tina offers a safe and nonjudgmental forum to discuss ambivalence regarding use, relationship and community norms, health issues, sex, and past and present struggles with control regarding drug use.
Group sessions may also include education and skill-building elements, as group members require, regarding strategies to decrease the harm associated with use, trigger identification and relapse prevention, increase positive support and address sexual behavior
The group is led by Jewish Family Service’s HIV Services clinical coordinator, a licensed clinical psychologist, and co-led by one of the organization’s experienced intervention case managers.
