Pain and pleasure: Join The Wine Smarties for the second installment of “Pain and Pleasure Wine Pairings and Anti-Pairings,” a tasting class that aims to help attendees better understand their palates and school them on the bittersweet love affair between food and wine. The class, which takes place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., will explore the more submissive wines and why they pair better with food. It will take place at the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center, located at 200 Harbor Dr. Admission is $35, but buy two tickets and get $10 off one ticket. Celebrate Dance Festival: See more than 70 regional dance artists and troupes perform in a diverse range of styles during the three-day annual festival in Balboa Park, which runs Friday, Aug. 25, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 27, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free. Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines: August is the month for music festivals, and there’s no better way to beat the summer heat than to get lost at the Idyllwild music festival, which takes place Aug. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Aug. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy headlines on Aug. 26 and Gerald Albright on Aug. 27, and numerous musical acts will grace the festival’s three stages. The festival takes place on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts Academy (52500 Temecula Rd.) and is a fund-raiser for the Idyllwild Arts Foundation. Gentleman’s Martini Night: San Diego’s weekly gathering for gay professionals and friends takes place at a different location each week. There are no membership fees, cover charges or hidden agendas. There is a mandatory dress code: dressy casual or business attire. The event takes place each week from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at some of the best known hotels and resorts in San Diego, Coronado and La Jolla. Fossil Mysteries exhibit: From dinosaurs to mammoths, discover the rich fossil history of our region. Traveling through a 75-million-year timeline, from the age of dinosaurs to the Ice Ages, experience an unfolding of the prehistory of Southern California and Baja California, Mexico. The San Diego Natural History Museum, located in Balboa Park, is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Non-member admission is $11, $9 for seniors and $7 for military and youth/students. Titus Andronicus: Returning from victory in the Gothic wars, General Titus Andronicus brings with him the fallen Goth queen and her sons. What follows in quite possibly Shakespeare’s bloodiest play is a passionate portrayal of humanity and atrocity, barbarity and beauty. Titus Andronicus plays as part of the Old Globe Theatre’s Summer Shakespeare Festival. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $19 to $59. The Old Globe is located in Balboa Park. (619) 231-1941.
