Win, Place, or Die! Get ready to laugh and be a part of the mystery at the Imperial House’s Mystery Café dinner theater production of Win, Place, or Die (My Jockeys are Killing Me!). Be right in the heart of the action as you travel to the Thoroughbred Club at Upson Down in Hollywood, circa 1946, to help solve a mystery! Everyone who’s anyone will be there. What does the camera see? Bela Dornon presents a free portrait seminar where participants will learn how to prepare for a portrait sitting. There will be a slideshow featuring several of the photographer’s portraits, as well as a posing demonstration. The event will take place at The Center, located at 3909 Centre St., from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Those who register by e-mail will receive three free portrait shots of themselves after the seminar. Women who kick comedy butt: Standup comedian Grace White brings her all-female, PG-13 “Women Who Kick Comedy Butt” comedy tour to downtown San Diego’s Sixth Avenue Bistro. The weekly fall comedy series will run through Nov. 25 and feature professional working comedians (who are funny) with impressive credits, as well as up-and-comers. “Aunt Rita Wants Pie”: Los Angeles artists Rigo Maldonado and Victoria Delgadillo invite you to visit the closing night of their exhibit, which will dazzle your appetite. The exhibit explores our obsession with food, investigating foods that are consumed beyond the need to nourish our bodies. The evening’s event will even include a bondage pie-eating contest and a human sundae surprise. Edward II: The Collective Theater Company continues their inaugural season with a deconstruction of Christopher Marlowe’s classic play Edward II. The Collective combines live theater, pre-filmed video and live camera feeds to give the play a modern resonance while keeping the soul of the story intact. A Taste: Come out for “A Taste” of the fourth annual San Diego Women Film Festival. This special screening will preview seven of the films to be shown at the October festival. San Diego Spa Week: The first ever San Diego Spa Week is here! Participants can get a high-end massage and facial service for $50 each (regularly $88), with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Cancer and Careers, a nonprofit organization for working women with cancer. Gnarls on tour: Come hear the award-winning song “Crazy” along with others when Gnarls Barkley, dubbed “The World’s Foremost Duo,” visits Viejas Concerts in the Park as part of their September tour. Gay Men’s Writing Group: The writing group meets at The Center at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Out at the Globe: A fun opportunity for the GLBT community to come together at a pre-show party with a hosted wine and martini bar, delicious appetizers and dessert.
