SDTF place second in Pacific Cup tournament

The San Diego Tennis Federation (SDTF) placed second out of five teams at the Pacific Cup tournament in Seattle, Wash., on Sept. 9.
A team of 13 players traveled to the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle for the two-day tournament. Players representing five West Coast tennis clubs competed in the tournament: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.
San Francisco came in first place winning 19 matches overall, while San Diego placed second with 16 match wins. Los Angeles (13), Seattle (eight) and Vancouver (four) came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
In singles competition, SDTF won seven matches. Ding Dizon came up with a close 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win over a Los Angeles player. Luke Tran, Ray Cherry, Carlos Santilla, Cyrus Azares, Tommy Sydavong and Steve Farrow all earned straight-set wins over their opponents.
In doubles play, the SDTF won nine matches. The tandem of Rob Voces and Kenn Baniqued survived a three-set win over San Francisco players, prevailing 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Baniqued and Voces also posted a 6-3, 7-6 win over a Seattle team.
The SDTF doubles team of Azares and Sydavong won two doubles matches. They beat a Vancouver team in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2, and a Los Angeles team 6-0, 6-2. Leon Ramos and Cherry defeated a Vancouver team 6-3, 6-1 and beat a Los Angeles team in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2.
Other SDTF doubles teams who posted wins included Mike Safino and Tran, Duc Nguyen and Santilla, and Dizon and Farrow.
