Frank, the wine guy
Fantasyland, part 1
Published Thursday, 21-Sep-2006 in issue 978
It was the wee hours of the morning and Chez Suave was closing up. I was sitting at the table with my good friends, Mr. Vino and Chef Kenny, and the conversation came up about cartoons and who our favorite Disney character is.
Mine is Donald Duck, while Chef Kenny loves Mickey Mouse and Mr. Vino adores Goofy. As I killed the bottle of Pommery champagne, Mr. Vino blurted out that he had never been to Disneyland, and a hush fell over our table. Chef Kenny and I were stunned Mr. Vino had never been to the mother of all theme parks, and with Chef Kenny’s insistence, we planned an impromptu visit to Disneyland so we could visit our heroes.
Very early in the morning, Chef Kenny’s limo picked us up and we jetted up the interstate to the Magic Kingdom. We enjoyed a bottle of Pol Roger Brut on the way up with plenty of hot coffee, orange juice and bagels. In the back of the limo, we were like toy-loving kids on Christmas Eve.
We discussed which rides we would go on. Chef Kenny wanted to go on Space Mountain and I wanted to jump on Pirates of the Caribbean. But Mr. Vino wanted to go to Fantasyland, and being his first time, we said, “Why not?”
As we glided through Main Street, we saw Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, which is the gateway to Fantasyland. I could see the delight in Mr. Vino’s face, like he was 7 years old again.
When we passed through the drawbridge, Mr. Vino smiled and said, “You know, wine has a lot of fantasy elements in it – and I’m not talking about intoxication.”
“What do you mean?” asked Chef Kenny as we got in line for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. “You know that wines have either a traditional name like chianti, or are named after the grape varietal and the region it is grown in, like Napa Valley merlot. But many wines invoke the image of fantasy. These wines are blends using traditional grapes together, like Opus One and Joseph Phelps Insignia, which use Bordeaux varietals like cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Because of the high percentage of cabernet sauvignon, both of these wines could be called cabernets but that evokes no image.”
We were carried wildly on the ride through buildings, scaring horses and cartoon women, until we passed through the laughing devils in cartoon Hell that signaled the end of the ride. We all had a good laugh.
“The famous white blend Conundrum is another nontraditional blend of sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and muscat canelli, with a little semillon and viognier thrown in for fun.”
Next up was the Mad Tea Cups. We were waiting in a rather short line and the conversation turned again to wine. Some fantasy-named wines, like Ferrari-Carano Sienna and Conundrum are nontraditional blends. Sienna, for example, is a blend of sangiovese, cab and other Bordeaux varietals. The famous white blend Conundrum is another nontraditional blend of sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and muscat canelli, with a little semillon and viognier thrown in for fun.
Chef Kenny spun the Mad Tea Cup as fast as he could leaving me and Mr. Vino crying for mercy.
We left the ride very dizzy and doing a little jig as we went to the next ride, Snow White’s Scary Adventures. The line was a little longer for this ride, but we were happy to wait as we continued our discussion.
“I have always loved these fantasy blends,” Chef Kenny said. “My favorite from California is Duckhorn’s Paraduxx, which is a blend of zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals.”
Mr. Vino nodded his head. “The blend of zin and cab creates a very lush wine,” he agreed.
As we came closer to meeting the beautiful Snow White and the funny dwarfs and scary witch, I told my friends about my favorite white wine, the beautiful Clos du Val Ariadne, a rich blend of semillon and sauvignon blanc, with semillon producing the bulk of the flavor. It is pure peach and honey.
We went on the ride and were wonderfully scared.
