Interested in spoken-word and performance poetry? Well, this season is the perfect time to be a female spoken-word artist in San Diego! If you like to write and perform (or just listen), there are a few events taking place locally that you just shouldn’t miss.
The first is OUTspoken!, The Center’s Women’s Resource Center’s annual women’s poetry competition. Last year’s competition was exciting, thought-provoking and sexually charged, and this year’s two-night run promises to be just as fun. Taking place at Diversionary Theatre (4545 Park Blvd. in University Heights) on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 26-27, OUTspoken! will feature poets of all types and all levels of experience, and will be hosted by community activist and performer Tryce Czyzynska.
“OUTspoken! is about giving LBT women a space to speak their minds, hearts and artistic souls,” explains Claudia Lucero, coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center and director of the event. “These evenings will be a great way to hear from all the wonderfully talented, outspoken women within our community.”
Tickets cost $5 per night, and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Diversionary Theatre or at Obelisk Bookstore (1029 University Ave. in Hillcrest).
During the first night of the competition, the audience will serve as judges; the second night, a panel of special judges will decide who receives the winning OUTspoken! crown.
So why should you attend or participate? “Whether you participate or just come to enjoy the event, OUTspoken! will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate women’s voices,” Lucero explains. Swing by the event on Sept. 26 and 27 to be entertained, intrigued and maybe just a little bit enlightened!
Then, after you get your feet wet at OUTspoken!, check out San Diego’s monthly women’s open mic, Siren. Hosted by local activist Emily Foster, Siren takes place on the first Thursday of each month at the Rubber Rose (3812 Ray St. in North Park). The next Siren open mic takes place Thursday, Oct. 5, and will feature local poet Eneri.
The Rubber Rose, a lesbian-owned sexuality boutique, is the perfect location for Siren. Before you watch the show, you can shop for quality sex toys, lingerie, clothing from local designers, strap-ons, leather-gear and more. So show up early and get your shop on!
Sign-ups for the open mic begin at 7:30 p.m., with the show starting at 8:00 p.m. And best of all, it’s free to attend! For more information about Siren, check out the Siren group on myspace.com
I feel it’s important to take a moment to stress that you don’t have to be a professional poet or performer to participate in OUTspoken! or Siren. At both events, performers of all levels take part in the fun, with some people performing for the very first time. The audiences at both events are the women of our community, and they welcome all women with open arms and open ears. If you are a newbie performer looking for a place to make your voice heard, I encourage you to take part in these events. You will never know what you are capable of if you don’t give it a whirl!

San Diego now has its very own GLBT talk radio program, “The Bridge,” airing on AM 1360 KLSD, San Diego’s progressive radio station. Co-hosted by Tryce Czyczynska and Ross Porter, the show airs on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. and features an array of topics critical to the GLBT community. Tune in and support this groundbreaking venture!
Need some help with your finances? The Women’s Resource Center will host a four-part “Women Building Wealth” workshop, which will take place on Thursdays, Oct. 5, 19 and 26, and Nov. 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the WRC, which is located at The Center (3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest). Jamie Fleming, a certified financial planner and certified retirement financial advisor, will present this empowering, enriching event as the first workshop in the Women’s Empowerment Series, a set of workshops offered by the Women’s Resource Center. You’ll learn about the psychology of money, the process before prosperity, preparing a plan of action and pitfalls to avoid on the road to building wealth. All sessions will be led by a San Diego financial planner.
Join the Old Women’s Project team on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 8:00 a.m. for a 1-3 mile Walk of Ages, Uniting Generations for Seniors to support ElderHelp. The walk-a-thon takes place at Point Loma’s Liberty Station (the old Naval Training Center). The Old Women’s Project strongly supports ElderHelp’s effective and practical assistance to old women who wish to remain in their homes and are unable to pay even a nominal fee for services. The financial contributions and the visibility generated by the walk will make a real difference in old women’s lives. For more information, e-mail info@oldwomensproject.org.
Lesbian rockers and “L-Word regulars Betty will perform in San Diego on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Canes (3105 Ocean Front Walk in Mission Beach), with local performers Lauren DeRose and MC Flow as special guests. If you want to pretend that you have a date with Shane from the “L-Word,” this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Canes box office, as well as through Ticketmaster. This show is for those 21 and older. Parking is free!
Ani DiFranco performs this Friday, Sept. 22, at Copley Symphony Hall (1245 Seventh Ave. downtown) in support of her new album, Reprieve. I will be there, along with pretty much every lesbian in the San Diego area.
The Adams Avenue Street Fair, Southern California’s largest free two-day music festival, will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Normal Heights community of San Diego. The festival will take place along Adams Avenue from 32nd to 35th Street.
The Silver Anniversary Edition of the Adams Avenue Street Fair will include more than 70 musical acts performing on six stages spread out over an eight-block area. The lineup this year is amazing! Performers you should definitely check out include: Get Back Loretta, Grand Ole Party, Fifty on Their Heels, Cash’d Out, Lady Dottie and the Diamonds, Society, Deep Rooted, Evan Bethany, Kite Flying Society, Joanie Mendenhall, Arabella Harrison, Molly Jenson and Greg Laswell.
Bourbon Street is quickly becoming the spot for the ladies of San Diego, now that Six Degrees has closed its doors. Friday night happy hour is always packed with women, but perhaps the best night at Bourbon is Sunday night, when Ashley Matte performs in the front bar from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and the all-around vibe is mellow and welcoming. Swing by any day of the week for drink specials, special events and the cutest girls and boys in San Diego.
For the boys, there are two special events coming up at Bacchus House. On Thursday, Sept. 21, the “Freshmen Magazine Tour” sponsored by straightcollegemen.com and Channel 1 Releasing will feature appearances by porn stars from straightcollegemen.com and 300 free copies of Freshmen magazine. The evening will be hosted by the incomparable Coco LaChine. On Thursday, Sept. 28, Bacchus will host casting and auditions for MTV’s dating show “Next.” This is your chance to be on MTV!
