So Cal Scorpions blast past New Mexico Burn 70-7
Scorpions put out New Mexico’s flame to secure playoff birth
Published Thursday, 28-Sep-2006 in issue 979
When the Scorpions took the field under new head coach Ray Peterson Jr., they knew their season was on the line. If they lost, they would be inched out by New York’s Empire State Roar for the last wildcard slot. If they won, the team would make the Women’s Professional Football League (WPFL) playoffs for a second straight season.
Not only did the Scorpions win, they crushed the New Mexico Burn 70-7 on Sept. 23 in their last game of the regular season at Edward’s Stadium in La Jolla.
The Scorpions improve to 6-2 overall, while the Burn fall to 0-8.
The Scorpions came with a mission, and it didn’t hurt to have San Diego Chargers’ Shawne Merriman on the sideline rooting on the team. San Diego football was in the house, it seemed, as defensive end Crystal “Brolik” Stokes gave her tribute to the Chargers’ Steve Foley when she reached the end zone after an interception scoop.
“These women are ready to fight” said Scorpions team owner Ann Bagala. “For the teams we are looking at for playoffs, they are all solid. This season is going to be the best playoff football yet for the WPFL.”
The Scorpions now have to wait for the outcome of the New England Intensity/Connecticut Cyclones game on Saturday, Sept. 30, to find out if they will host the game or be traveling to New England or Dallas, Texas, for the first round on Saturday, Oct. 7.
