Frank, the wine guy
Fantasyland, part 2
Published Thursday, 28-Sep-2006 in issue 979
Mr. Vino, Chef Kenny and I were enjoying all the splendors of Fantasyland, and next up was the famous Matterhorn, the great roller coaster ride through a mountain.
We were getting close to the bobsleds when we saw Goofy, and we had to take a photo op. Goofy was sandwiched between Mr. Vino and Chef Kenny when I snapped the picture.
After that excitement, Mr. Vino continued our conversation about fantasy wines. “In California, there are other interesting blends, both traditional and nontraditional grape varietals,” he said. “One of my favorites is Swanson’s Alexis, which is a blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon and syrah.”
“Yes, that is a beautiful wine,” Chef Kenny said. “The fruit comes from Oakville and has luscious red berry and dark berry flavors with a good concentration of fruit.”
I added: “All wine lovers know that Napa Valley produces remarkable cabernet sauvignon; the best outside of the left bank in Bordeaux. What a lot of wine drinkers don’t understand is that the Napa Valley produces wonderful syrah; inky and very purple.”
Suddenly we found ourselves on the bobsleds climbing up the Matterhorn. Before you could say “Mickey Mouse,” we were going down through the roller coaster mountain and avoiding the clutches of the hairy Abominable Snowman, spinning our way down the mountain. Mr. Vino and Chef Kenny were screaming as we hit the base of mountain. We made a huge splash and got a little wet.
We then went to our next ride, Alice in Wonderland. I have always loved this ride and I was looking forward to Mr. Vino meeting the Queen of Hearts.
As we got in line for the ride, Chef Kenny said, “You both know I love the Napa Valley wines, but a little south on the coast is Paso Robles and they are producing world-class wines.”
“My friend, you are talking about the great Justin winery and their two great fantasy red wines, Isosceles and Justification,” Mr. Vino said. “Isosceles is such a gorgeous vino.”
Chef Kenny nodded his head and declared, “It is my favorite Bordeaux blend made in California.”
“What a lot of wine drinkers don’t understand is that the Napa Valley produces wonderful syrah; inky and very purple.”
I thought to myself, it would be hard for me to disagree; the wine is such a dark-violet velvet monster that it just explodes on the palate.
Then I said: “My favorite is Justification, which is a new-world, right bank wine. Two-thirds of it is the beautiful and aromatic cabernet franc and the rest supple merlot.”
Mr. Vino agreed it was subtle and rich as we climbed into the pink caterpillar car of the Alice in Wonderland ride. We then followed the white rabbit down the rabbit hole and found ourselves in Wonderland, where we met Tweedledum and Tweedledee and the disappearing Cheshire Cat. We delighted in the Mad Tea Party and remembered it was our “un-birthday” too.
Finally we heard the screaming of the Queen of Hearts – “Off with their heads!” – and soon found ourselves outside, all smiles, having enjoyed our visit to Wonderland.
“Wine can be like a Cheshire Cat,” Mr. Vino said. “It is here, and before you turn around it is gone, but it leaves a smile on your face.”
We then headed toward Storybook Land.
As we waited in line, we discussed other fantasy wines. Most were Bordeaux blends, and we argued a bit about which was our favorite. I held out for Conn Creek’s Anthology, which is made using all five Bordeaux red varietals, including petit verdot and malbec – great red and black fruit and creamy oak, just wonderful. The winery only makes 3,500 cases, and it sells for about a quarter of the price of Opus One or Phelps Insignia.
We were delighted by Storybook Land and the rest of Disneyland. At the end of the evening, we were spellbound by the fireworks and Tinker Bell flying on a wire. We stayed at the park until closing.
Driving home in Chef Kenny’s limo, we shared a couple bottles of Justification and Isosceles as we wore our new Mickey Mouse T-shirts and mouse ears. It was a wonderful fantasy and great wine.
