Robin S.
Sassy, spunky dance floor diva to appear at Club Papi fourth anniversary party
Published Thursday, 05-Oct-2006 in issue 980
She’s got the pipes, she’s still got the looks and she’s definitely got the energy. If you want Robin S. to show you “where the love is,” head on down to Rich’s on Saturday, Oct. 7, where the dance music diva will perform hits like “Show Me Love,” “Givin’ U All That I’ve Got” and “Luv 4 Luv” live at Club Papi’s fourth anniversary party.
Robin S. has been involved in several R&B music collections and is known for her big-voiced, sassy interpretations. She’s had several hits, including “Back It Up,” “It Must Be Love” and “What I Do Best,” that still get air play, and she’s contributed to a few soundtracks such as Doctor Dolittle and Space Jam, and she wants to do a lot more singing in the future.
The entertainer is awaiting a green light so that she can start recording a brand new album, and there is no doubt in my mind that her upcoming album will jump-start another hit parade of dance tunes that are going to heat up gay dance floors around the globe.
Robin S. promises to bring down the house when she visits San Diego in October, and I don’t doubt that she’s a woman of her word.
I recently spoke with the Queens, N.Y., native while she was in Atlanta, where she’s lived for the past six years.
Gay & Lesbian Times: Do you consider yourself a performer or a singer?
Robin S.: I’m an entertainer. I believe I give my audience much more than just dance floor songs; I give them a show that’s going to take them somewhere.
GLT: Your first single, “Show Me Love,” went gold in the early ’90s. Can we expect another gold album from Robin S. sometime soon?
RS: With this new album waiting in the wings, I’m hoping for gold to strike in the very near future.
GLT: What’s on your agenda besides entertaining at dance clubs?
RS: I’m busy writing more songs and hoping that I may have some success in penning jingles as well; branching out a bit and perhaps even doing some voice-over work.
GLT: You seem to have that perfect balance between dance grooves and gospel. How did that happen?
RS: My career began at the age of 5 in a church choir. I studied vocal training with the legendary Brook Alexander. You might say he took me from the church choir and gave me the confidence to become an entertainer. But my roots will always be in gospel music.
GLT: You’ve been awarded Best Dance Artist at the Billboard Awards and you’ve entertained here in the states as well as abroad. What’s your favorite European fan-based city?
RS: I really don’t have a favorite. I am just glad to have had the opportunity to travel extensively to cities [in] Holland, France and so many more, and being able to share my gift with so many around the world.
GLT: You have said that you are a “messenger of hope.” What does that mean?
RS: As an entertainer, I want my fans to know that if you have the faith to persevere, you will always win out in the end.
GLT: Give me three words that describe Robin S.
RS: Sexy, sassy and classy.
GLT: What are you going to bring to your fans in San Diego with this current visit?
RS: Honesty, truth and pure entertainment.
GLT: What was your childhood ambition?
RS: To be a singer. Even though I now have grandchildren, I still hold true to that original ambition.
GLT: Who are some of the people who have influenced your career in a positive way?
RS: Nancy Wilson and Patti LaBelle. Nancy was one of the first to introduce me to the industry.
GLT: Describe some of the obstacles to your continued success.
RS: The fact that some individuals in the industry want to categorize my talents and limit them to a dance floor singer. Although I don’t have a problem with being a dance floor singer, I can do more – much more.
GLT: Have you branched out and done other things aside from being a dance artist?
RS: Yes. I was in a play called When a Man Cries, a Tyler Perry play. I hope to do more acting in the future if opportunities come my way.
GLT: Where is Robin S.’s private retreat?
RS: Within the four walls of my home.
GLT: What’s a perfect day for you?
RS: Every day that I wake up and know that I’m alive is another perfect day.
GLT: What’s your biggest indulgence?
RS: Chocolate.
GLT: If you were to sum up everything you’ve learned in life, how would you describe that experience to date?
RS: That life is always fascinating.
GLT: What’s your most cherished quality?
RS: I’m a good listener.
GLT: If you could be any famous person, who would it be?
RS: Me.
