Desperately seeking talent: Make that Desperately Seeking Susan, Madonna’s first foray into film and the movie that introduced us to the song “Get into the Groove” long before it was used to hawk jeans for The Gap. Showtime is 7:00 p.m. at the Museum of Photographic Art in Balboa Park. If you still need more ‘80s nostalgia you can stick around for the second show of the night, the classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For more information, call (619) 238-7559.
Grunion run: Nothing says romance like hundreds of fish flopping around in the high tide mating like crazy. The “Dance of Love” takes place on the beach, where the silvery little fish put on a great show for a first date as mommy grunions lay eggs in the high-tide line of the sand and daddy grunions fertilize the little grunions-to-be. Some people come to hunt the little fish, but if that’s your plan be sure and get a fishing license (you can pick one up at WalMart) otherwise sit back, enjoy the show and let the mating begin! The show starts at high tide in Pacific Beach.

Walk, don’t run: Take a walking tour of East Village starting off at Horton Plaza at 10:00 a.m. With all the renovation, skyscrapers-in-progress and the ballpark to the south, it’s hard to believe the East Village was the slightly seedy warehouse district of San Diego from the late 1800s to the late 1900s. The Urban Art Trail is the thread you’ll explore, with detours for the historic tidbits and new development that are revitalizing this area. For more information, call (619) 238-1596.
Diva, feminist and NRA spokeswoman: Annie Get Your Gun! Is playing at the Lawrence Welk Resort (8860 Lawrence Welk Dr. in Escondido). Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee started hunting as soon as she could shoulder a rifle. After entering a local sharp-shooting contest, the petite teen caught the eye of veteran vaudeville marksman Frank Butler — competing head to head, she beat him 25 shots to 24. Romance ensued and the two were married when the newly dubbed Annie Oakley was still in her teens. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. Call (760) 749-3448 for more information.

Calle Diez Latin Music Festival 2003: Seven bands from all over the world will perform at the Sixth Annual WorldBeat Center’s Calle Diez Latin Music Festival, paying tribute to salsa and jazz greats Mongo Santamaria and Celia Cruz. Every year the festival takes place at the ReinCarnation Building at 10th and J St. in downtown San Diego’s East Village. Gates open at 1:00 p.m. and the show is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 and children under 12 get in free. Call (619) 615-0949 for more information.

Jazz it up: La Jolla Concerts by the Sea presents the Navy Band Southwest Fleet Jazz Ensemble at 2:00 p.m. in the Scripps Park. There are plenty of grassy knolls for picnics, lounging in the sun and just relaxing. Musical performances are free for anyone within listening distance. Concession stands provide hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream and drinks, and profits support these free concerts. For more information, call (619) 221-8900.

No Labor at All: Meet the Rainbow Cyclists near the restrooms at Tidelands Park in Coronado for the easiest 20-mile bicycle ride you will ever experience. You can even take the ferry from the Broadway Pier downtown to Coronado for just $5. This is the coolest, easiest, flattest ride in the country — from Tidelands Park down the Silver Strand to Imperial Beach — and it’s the perfect way to build up an appetite for a great Labor Day BBQ with friends and family.

Tony Bennett: Do we really need to say any more than that? The legendary crooner recently released a CD of duets with k.d. lang, and now he is going to be putting on a live outdoor concert at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay. What better way to ease yourself back into the week after a lovely Labor Day weekend, now that all the tourists from Arizona are gone? The show starts at 8:00 p.m. and the venue is located at 2241 Shelter Island Dr. Call the concert line at (619) 523-1010 for more information.
Urban Identities: The Grossmont College Hyde Art Gallery presents paintings by artists John Abel, Wade Cline and Robert Goldman. These three very accomplished artists have produced imagery that stands true to the reality that is represented. Yet, in each case the works are done in a wonderfully painterly fashion. The imaginations of all three artists are seen through the brush strokes that yield up beautiful rich colors for us to enjoy. The artists’ opening will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 8800 Grossmont College Dr. Call (619) 644-7299 for more information.
Wednesday, 3
Jazz in the Park: Bud Shanke/Pete Christleib Quintet. The San Diego Museum of Art presents a rare Southern California appearance of these two jazz saxophone legends. The concert starts at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $12/$15. Call (619) 232-7931 for more information.

It’s a swan, with wings that flap: “Origami Masterworks – Innovative Forms of the Art of Paper Folding” has opened at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park. Most of the objects in the show were created out of a single piece of paper folded to make geometrical forms, flowers, trees, people, masks and a menagerie of real, fanciful and prehistoric animals. The show runs through January and the Museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., so what’s the rush? There’s no fire and the paper is not going anywhere if you can’t make it today. Call (619) 239-0003 for more information.

Shrieking little girls and gay men: Oh my God! It’s Hanson! They’re back (in case you hadn’t noticed they left), and they have a new album coming out. You can get a preview of some of their new tunes on their first tour in three years. Hanson is keeping things on the down low with an acoustic set and a schedule of small-to-medium-sized clubs, allowing the brothers Hanson to revisit some old favorites and try out new, unreleased songs. Oh, and the annoying “MMMBop” has been left out of the play list. The show is at The Scene, 7514 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Call (858) 505-9111 for more information.
