Mama’s Kitchen Pie in the Sky bake sale
Individuals and business volunteers throughout San Diego County will pre-sell pies Oct. 18-Nov. 15 for Mama’s Kitchen’s Pie in the Sky bake sale.
Now in its second year, Mama’s Kitchen’s Pie in the Sky bake sale is the largest organized bake sale of its kind in San Diego. San Diego’s top bakers, caterers and chefs, including the Sycuan Resort and Casino and The French Gourmet, will donate holiday pies. These apple, pecan and pumpkin pies will feed thousands throughout San Diego County neighborhoods this Thanksgiving. The pies cost $20 each.
Every pie sold pays for almost half of each Mama’s Kitchen client’s weekly meals. This year, Mama’s Kitchen hopes to sell 5,000 pies and raise $100,000 to directly fund thousands of free, nutritious meals and help ensure no one living with HIV/AIDS or other critical illnesses in the community will go hungry. Clients live in all regions of San Diego County: north to Oceanside, east to Alpine, south to Otay Mesa and Chula Vista as well as central San Diego and the beach communities.
Pie buyers can select from more than 30 sites to pick up their pies on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Pies can also be purchased online at www.mamaskitchen.org.
Volunteers are needed from throughout San Diego County to sell pies and raise awareness. A training and kick-off party is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 14, at Mama’s Kitchen, located at 1875 Second Ave. For more information, contact Denise Scatena at (619) 233-6262.

Equality Forum launches GLBT History Month
Equality Forum has designated October GLBT History Month, and is honoring 31 leaders throughout the month with a video, biography and bibliography of each celebrating their achievements.
Leaders were nominated by executive directors of statewide, national and international GLBT organizations. The criteria for nominees are: national or international GLBT persons, living or deceased, distinguished within their field of endeavor as national heroes or in the GLBT civil rights movement. The nominees were selected by GLBT History Month co-chairs the Rev. Nancy Wilson, international moderator of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC), and Professor Kenji Yoshino, deputy dean for Intellectual Life at Yale Law School.
Equality Forum has produced a video for each leader which will be streamed daily on four gay Web portals and broadcast on two gay television channels. Equality Forum has offered the leader videos without charge to nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and for-profit corporations for their Web sites.
