The So Cal Scorpions beat the New England Intensity 30-0 in an Oct. 7 wildcard game at Edward’s Stadium in La Jolla to reach the Women’s Professional Football League’s (WPFL) American Conference championship game for the second year in a row.

The Scorpions (7-2) will travel to Dallas, Texas, for a showdown against the Dallas Diamonds (7-1) on Oct. 21 in a rematch of last year’s American Conference championship. Last season, the Scorpions lost to the Diamonds 48-19.

The Scorpions played solidly from the start of the game and did not let up in their intensity. Wide receiver Carmen Cruz scored after a 15-yard reception from quarterback Aisha Ruffo for a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Heather Winters added a 27-yard field goal for a 9-0 lead, while Ruffo connected with Cruz again for a 13-yard reception and a 16-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, tight end Katrina Walter scored a touchdown on a 3-yard rush for a 23-0 lead. Walter added another touchdown 10 minutes later, again on a 3-yard rush.

Rushing for 44 yards, 3.9 yards per carry and two touchdowns, Walter was named this week’s offensive player of the game.

Crystal “Brolik” Stokes was named defensive player of the game for her 11 tackles, seven sacks and two hurries.

Overall, the Scorpions rushed for 141 yards during the game. Ruffo connected with 11 of 24 passes for 162 yards.

The Houston Energy (7-1) will face the Wisconsin Wolverines (7-2) in the National Conference championship in Houston on Oct. 21. The WPFL championship game takes place on Saturday, Nov. 4, at a location to be announced.
