A romantic moment from ‘Saving Face’

This year, my housemates and I are celebrating our gayest Halloween yet. In true lesbian form, we’ve already begun assembling Halloween costumes for our cats, way before giving a thought to our own costumes. And we are taking the task extremely seriously. Yesterday, my girlfriend and I made our way down to Michael’s in Mission Valley to search the aisles for all the necessary supplies. After about 30 minutes of searching, we had everything we needed in order to transform our cats into festive felines.
Dewy, our 20-lb. tuxedo tomcat, is going to be a vampire. We figured this was perfect, since we can incorporate his already glorious tuxedo into the costume. I purchased a black child-sized T-shirt to cut into a cape (from past projects, I know the T-shirt neckline will fit perfectly around his neck), as well as red felt to line the cape with. I also purchased a piece of red ribbon and some gold glitter with which to construct a vampire medallion. All I need now is a little fake blood to dribble down his chest and we’ll be on our way!
For our two female felines, my girlfriend found pink “tulle on a spool” and a spool of elastic to make perfect little ballerina tutus. Gianna, our friend who can knit or crochet anything, will be making the girls mini legwarmers. And when all is said and done, we should have some of the best-dressed cats in town once Halloween rolls around!
I guess it’s pretty true that in the queer community many of us treat our pets like our children. You only have to look as far as Tag in Hillcrest or Lucky Dog downtown to see that we love to pamper, spoil and style our pets. But don’t they deserve it? For all the love, affection and unconditional loyalty they give us, the least we can do is provide them with doggles (dog goggles, for the layperson), rhinestone collars and electronic litter boxes! I am all for it.
So this Halloween, think outside the box, act a little silly and give your loving pet the outfit he or she so lovingly deserves. Next, send your pet costume pics to editor@uptownpub.com and I’ll publish the best ones in next month’s column!
Halloween happenings
Of course, you deserve a few tricks and treats on Halloween as well.

If Halloween is not your thing, there are plenty of other great events taking place around town, so make sure to pull out your calendar.
The Women’s Resource Center (located at The Center, 3909 Centre St.) will host the next Red Hot Nightclub on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 6:00 p.m., featuring dance music and entertainment from everybody’s favorite performer, Laura Jane! On Friday, Nov. 10, at 7:00 p.m., Sapphic Cinema at the WRC will screen Saving Face, a lesbian romantic comedy. The plot? A Chinese-American surgeon living in Manhattan is shocked when her single mother shows up on her doorstep pregnant. To help her mom save face and avoid the taboo in the Chinese community of an unmarried woman pregnant, the doctor helps her mom find “Mr. Right” while simultaneously coming to terms with her own lesbian identity. I’ve seen this movie and it’s adorable, so go check out Sapphic Cinema!

Electro-hip-hop duo Avenue D visits S.D. on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
If music is your thing, plenty of great artists are heading this way in upcoming months. Female electro hip-hop duo Avenue D will hit the San Diego Sport Club in Hillcrest on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Regina Spektor (a must see!) will perform at Canes on Sunday, Nov. 5, and Joan Jett hits the House of Blues on Monday, Nov. 6. Ray LaMontagne (one of my favorites) visits Spreckels Theatre on Friday, Nov. 10. And last but definitely not least, Lady Sovereign rocks the House of Blues on Sunday, Nov. 19. Since the weather is getting cooler, this is a great time to get indoors and listen to good music, so go for it!
Anxious to get on stage and rock out yourself? The next Siren Open Mic for Women will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2, at the Rubber Rose (3812 Ray St.) at 8:00 p.m., with sign-up for the open mic beginning at 7:30 p.m. Hosted by Emily Foster, Siren is the number-one spot to hear original work from local female and trans poets, writers and activists. And, best of all, the event is free and open to all ages! See what the buzz is about by swinging by Siren on Nov. 2!
That’s it on my end for this month. Wishing you all a spooky and spectacular Halloween!
