Race for the Cure
Komen San Diego’s Race for the Cure is San Diego County’s largest race supporting local breast cancer education and awareness. This year’s co-ed 5K (3.1-mile) run takes place in Balboa Park on Sunday, Nov. 5.
A new event, Kids for the Cure, encourages families to educate children ages 12 and under about breast cancer awareness by allowing their children to join the thousands of expected race participants in this year’s Race for the Cure. In addition, San Diegans who cannot attend the Race for the Cure can participate in Sleep In for the Cure, an opportunity provided by Komen San Diego that allows people to pay a fee slightly more than the race entry fee and receive a special Sleep In for the Cure nightshirt. The costs for Race for the Cure, Kids for the Cure and Sleep In for the Cure are $25, $15 and $30, respectively.
Proceeds from Race for the Cure, Kids for the Cure and Sleep In for the Cure benefit the Komen Foundation, with 75 percent of all proceeds remaining in San Diego for breast cancer education, screening and diagnosis. The remaining 25 percent supports national breast cancer research programs.
For more information, visit the national Web site at www.komen.org or the San Diego affiliate Web site at www.sdkomen.org. Sign up for the race at the Komen San Diego Web site or call In Motion at (760) 692-2900.
Christie’s Place 10th anniversary gala to feature Kathy Najimy
Christie’s Place, a San Diego organization dedicated exclusively to supporting women, children and families living with HIV/AIDS, will celebrate its 10th anniversary “Legacy of Hope” gala on Friday, Nov. 3, from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the Bahia Resort Hotel.
Movie and television actress Kathy Najimy, star of Hollywood hits Sister Act and Hocus Pocus, will be the keynote speaker.
“The HIV/AIDS spotlight needs to focus on all the faces affected by this disease, particularly women and children,” said Liz Brosnan, Christie’s Place executive director.
Christie’s Place provides education, advocacy and support services such as childcare, clothing and counseling to more than 1,000 women, children and families annually.
Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses, and heterosexual contact was the source of 78 percent of new infections among women, Brosnan said, adding that nationwide HIV/AIDS hits African-American women harder than any other group. It is the leading cause of death among African-American women ages 25 to 34.
All proceeds from the 10th anniversary “Legacy of Hope” event will benefit Christie’s Place, which is dedicated to the memory of Christie Milton-Torres, who at age 20 was diagnosed with HIV. She died in 1994 due to complications from AIDS. In 1996, Christie’s mother, Irene Milton, co-founded Christie’s Place.
“Christie was a tireless advocate for the needs of women and families living with HIV/AIDS,” Milton said. “She wanted to empower them to take charge of their own health and improve the quality of life for their children and family members.”
The gala will feature Najimy, an AIDS activist who was recently named Ms. magazine’s “Woman of the Year.” Najimy has appeared in more than 20 films, including: Hocus Pocus, Rat Race, Hope Floats, Nevada, Cats Don’t Dance, Zack and Reba, This Is My Life, The Fisher King, Say Uncle, Soapdish and The Hard Way. She has also had cameo appearances in It’s Pat, The Wedding Planner, Jeffrey, The Big K and the just-released Margaret Cho film, Bam Bam and Celeste.
Tickets for the gala are $100. For more information, call (619) 702-4186 or visit www.christiesplace.org.
The Bahia Resort Hotel is located at 998 West Mission Bay Dr. in Mission Beach.
