Your vote is your voice
Published Thursday, 02-Nov-2006 in issue 984
As a bloc, the GLBT vote has the ability to shape public policy and create positive change in our communities. We’re educated, politically active and care about the issues. But even the most politically savvy could use a little help. If that’s you, and you’re feeling unsure about whom you should vote for, or feel lost just looking at the daunting list of state and local propositions on the ballot this year, don’t worry. We’ve done most of the work for you.
Every election season, the Gay & Lesbian Times prepares a tear-out voter guide (page 43) to take with you to the polls on Election Day. Now, not all of us gays agree 100 percent on who to vote for, so we’ve even included endorsements from both the San Diego Democratic Club and the Log Cabin Republicans. And if you flip through this week’s issue, you’ll also find an advertisement from GLBT Vote 2006 with its list of endorsements. The important thing is that you vote.
But then you probably already knew that. Chances are if you’re reading this editorial you’re all set to vote this Tuesday. But you can do more than just show up and cast your vote. Grab your cell phone and scroll through your address book. Call everyone you know and make sure they remember to vote. Since you’ve got them on the phone, why not convince them to vote for candidates with good records on GLBT issues?
Another important call to make is to friends and family back home. Several states across the nation have anti-same-sex marriage initiatives on the ballot. If that’s your home state, get everyone you know from home to support you and your rights by voting against discrimination.
You’ll also notice on your ballot this year a list of associate justices not included in our voter guide. These are justices who have been appointed by a California governor and are up for what is called a retention election. This means a simple majority will keep them in their seats. After researching those listed, we have not found any undeserving of retaining their seats and therefore recommend a yes vote.
Here’s a recap of the candidates we’ve endorsed for the general election this Tuesday, Nov. 7. For a complete list, see page 43.
Phil Angelides for governor
Phil Angelides has agreed to sign same-sex marriage legislation if elected governor; the same legislation the current Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed in 2005.
Congressmember Susan Davis
A strong ally of the GLBT community, Davis recently signed on to the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which seeks to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which prohibits gay, lesbian and bisexual servicemembers from serving openly.
John Rinaldi for Congress
Openly gay congressional candidate John Rinaldi faces a tough battle against Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter. As a Navy veteran, former police officer and small business owner, Rinaldi has run a solid campaign that not only captured the Democratic nomination but has swayed many Republican voters in East County.
Assemblymember Lori Saldaña
A co-sponsor of the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, Assemblymember Lori Saldaña is a true ally and friend of the GLBT community. Her voting record during her first term confirms her commitment to civil rights for all communities.
Chula Vista Mayor Steve Padilla
Openly gay Mayor Steve Padilla came out at the Spirit of Stonewall Rally during Pride weekend 2005. He’s facing a tough race against Republican challenger Cheryl Cox. If re-elected, Padilla will have to win back this paper’s full support, but we believe he is Chula Vista’s best choice for mayor.
