AIDS Quilt at UCSD for World AIDS Day
The University of California, San Diego will recognize World AIDS Day on Thursday, Nov. 30, with a public viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
The quilt will be on display at the Price Center Ballroom on the UCSD campus from 7:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
On display at UCSD will be three sections of the quilt that were created by San Diego organizations and individuals as San Diegans responded to the AIDS crisis, both during the early years of the epidemic and the present. Each block (or section) of the quilt measures approximately 12 feet square, and a typical block consists of eight individual 3-foot by 6-foot panels sewn together. The quilt consists of more than 40,000 panels commemorating the lives of people who died of AIDS.
Founded in 1987, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is a memorial for use in preventing new HIV infections and is the largest ongoing community arts project in the world. For more information, visit www.aidsquilt.org.
Along with the AIDS Quilt, UCSD will sponsor a number of other events in recognition of World AIDS Day, which takes place Friday, Dec. 1.
A morning vigil will be held from 7:00 until 9:00 a.m. at the Price Center Ballroom.
The day also will include ongoing multimedia presentations, including a photography exhibit titled “Living Proof: Courage in the face of AIDS,” by Carolyn Jones, as well as a Wall of Remembrance for the public to reflect on those who have been affected by the disease. Participants are encouraged to bring pictures and artifacts to place on or near the Wall of Remembrance, but they will not be returned.
Red ribbons and condom “roses” will be handed out at UCSD’s Library Walk throughout the day. A Path of Remembrance will be located on the grounds near Library Walk documenting the 25 years of HIV/AIDS with 25 milestones for participants to traverse.
At 3:00 p.m. at the Price Center Ballroom, a performance will take place addressing the impact of HIV/AIDS on people’s lives. This presentation will draw on the lived experiences of UCSD community members and their personal journeys within the pandemic.
The film A Closer Walk will be screened at the Price Center Ballroom continuously from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Directed, written and produced by Oscar nominee Robert Bilheimer and narrated by Glenn Close and Will Smith, the film explores the intricate relationship of health, dignity and human rights. Also screening continuously will be an AIDS Quilt multimedia retrospective and a history of HIV/AIDS events during the last 25 years.
The UCSD Medical Center will host a World AIDS Day Conference on Dec. 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Medical Center’s main auditorium. The conference will address a range of issues throughout the day, including the impact of AIDS in Africa and a review of HIV treatment in the past, present and future. The cost to attend is $35 for UCSD employees, $20 for students and $40 for general community members. It includes course materials, breakfast and lunch. Visit http://nre.ucsd.edu to register.

Art Around Adams event Dec. 2
The seventh annual Art Around Adams art and live performance event will take place Saturday, Dec. 2, along Adams Avenue in San Diego’s Kensington and Normal Heights neighborhoods.
This year’s expanded event will include more than 50 artists showcasing original art, including paintings, drawings, mixed media and sculpture. Performances by Sushi, a performance and visual arts company, as well as the Eveoke Dance Theatre will also be featured
Exhibits will be open from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m., and performances take place between 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. A variety of stores and art studios along Adams Avenue will participate in the event, either by hosting artists or offering special event merchandise, wine tasting and refreshments.
The mile-long venue route will run from Vista Street in Kensington (six blocks east of the Highway 15/Adams Avenue exit) to 30th Street in Normal Heights. A free trolley will be available to transport people along the route.
Art Around Adams coordinator Papaha Gosline said the event is different than any other art show in San Diego.
“Art Around Adams is a local community art event much like Art Walk was 20 years ago, when very unique and talented artists showed their work inside and outside interesting little businesses and spaces along the length and breadth of one of San Diego’s intriguing, eclectic neighborhoods,” Gosline said. “Our hope is to grow in a way that keeps this fascinating element – showcasing Normal Heights and Kensington, along with our artists and artists from around San Diego – without becoming a street-booth/art-crafts show like so many other ‘art fairs’ around the county.”
For more information, call (619) 269-9322 or visit www.artaroundadams.org.
