Last chance for Lucifer and the Grinch
Published Thursday, 21-Dec-2006 in issue 991
La Pastorela de la Estrella
This is your last chance to watch Lucifer (Ed Hollingsworth) take on the Archangel Michael (Joseph Molina) in the 16th production of Teatro Máscara Mágica’s La Pastorela de la Estrella at the Old Globe’s Cassius Carter Centre Stage. The show closes Dec. 23.
Written by Max Branscomb, this year’s tale of the shepherds wending their way to Bethlehem has the humble pilgrims tempted along the way by Satan (Timothy Paul Evans), Moloch (Anthony Hamm) and The Man himself, aided by Lust (Erica Parast), first seen falling out of a tight red dress. But fear not: The bad dudes are thwarted at every turn by the God squad.
It’s a raucous good time for all, with the rhymed dialogue almost all in English, a dozen songs in Spanish, political jokes (sample: “Herod’s been a bit of a pill/Recently he’s been channeling Kim Jung-Il”) and lots of audience participation.
Teatro Máscara Mágica’s La Pastorela de la Estrella plays through Dec. 23 at the Old Globe Theatre’s Cassius Carter Centre Stage. Shows Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee Saturday at 2:00 p.m. For tickets, call (619) 234-5623 or visit www.theoldglobe.org.
And don’t forget that mean ol’ Grinch, playing next door at the Globe through Dec. 29.
