Breast cancer support group
The Center offers a support group for lesbian and bisexual women who have had or currently have breast cancer. Women at all stages of treatment are welcome. There is no charge for this support group. It meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at The Center’s Health Services, 2313 El Cajon Blvd. For more information, contact Regina at (619) 260-6380.
Coping with grief and loss
The Center is offering a professionally facilitated support and discussion group for men and women who are coping with grief and loss. Auditions for ‘You Should Be So Lucky’
The OnStage Playhouse at 291 Third Ave in Chula Vista is holding auditions for Charles Busch’s You Should Be So Lucky on Sept. 7 and 8. The screwball comedy calls for three men and three women. The play is about a wealthy Jewish banker who endows a young man with a $10 million dollar inheritance then comes back as a ghost to help spend it. Dave Retheret will direct the play, which will run Oct. 31 through Nov. 29. Headshots and résumés will be helpful for the audition, but are not necessary. Latin Pride announces new hours
The Bienestar Community Advisory Board has voted to change the hours of operation for this year’s Latin Pride festival. The new hours of operation will be from 12:00 noon to 10:00 p.m. Also, the vendor booth application deadline has been extended to Sept. 5. Anyone interested in keeping up to date on the progress of the upcoming festival can attend weekly developmental meetings at the Bienestar office on Fridays at 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact Latin Pride Executive Director Ben Gomez at (619) 295-5893.
Drag queen workshop for youth, Sept. 5
The Imperial Court de San Diego will be holding a drag queen workshop for the Gay Youth Alliance this Friday, Sept. 5. The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. at Bienestar (3020 North Park Way). Attendees who wish to try their hand at drag queen make-up artistry should come with scrubbed faces and learn from the experts. Attendees must be 24 years of age or under to attend. The Gay Youth Alliance is also training new members for leadership positions. Those who are interested need to attend steering committee meetings on Sept. 5 and Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Bienestar. Performing arts workshop to benefit Christie’s Place
Professional dancer Morie Williams will offer a performing arts workshop to benefit Christie’s Place, a support center for women and children living with HIV and AIDS. The workshops run through Sept. 30. Children’s classes are $10, adult classes are $12 and there is discount for purchasing multiple classes. Dancing, singing and acting classes are all being offered and a portion of the proceeds will go directly to Christie’s Place. New time for 5 Minute Man
Family Health Centers has been successfully providing a fun and entertaining way for gay men to meet other guys since March of this year. To accommodate the number of people interested, the time has been changed. Starting with their next event, this Sunday, Sept.7, they will begin at 7:00 p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. Events will continue to be held at the Joyce Beers Community Center at the Uptown Shopping Center. APICAP celebrates 10 years, Sept. 20
The Asian Pacific Islander Community AIDS Project (APICAP) marks its 10th anniversary in a celebration of hope, service and compassion. The gala will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Wyndham Emerald Plaza Hotel’s Emerald Ballroom (400 West Broadway, downtown). A silent auction will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. The formal event includes a night of entertainment by the nationally acclaimed performer, Jocelyn Enriquez, and local talent Armi Guzman. Co-hosting the night of festivities will be Maria Arcega-Dunn, of Fox News and Noel Guanzon. Complementing the evening’s theme, APICAP will be honoring Dr. Sana Loue, Jeffery Tom and Dr. Linda Lloyd for demonstrating tireless community contributions of hope, service and compassion respectively. APICAP is a non-profit organization dedicated to securing justice for and protection of the rights of Asian/Pacific Islanders living with HIV. The organization provides services to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, including outreach, paraprofessional counseling and support, health education, prevention and risk-reduction.
North County Pride in the Park, Oct. 4
North County Pride In The Park IV is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 4. The event will be held at Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Dr., in Vista. The theme for the Festival this year is “Expanding Community Through Awareness.” The event will be held from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. and remains free. North County Pride in the Park IV will offer a resource and health fair, live entertainment and a children’s area. Refreshments, food, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Visual artists will be able to display their work in a special exhibit space being sponsored by Real Individuals Seeking Expression (R.I.S.E.). Gay men’s bereavement group begins Sept. 17
The CDG Ring of Life will be hosting a six-week workshop for gay widowers on grief management and steps to building a new future. The workshop starts on Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at Being Alive, 4070 Centre Street in Hillcrest. The workshop is free and refreshments will be provided. Outfest announces film schedule, volunteer meeting on Sept. 9
Outfest San Diego will be held Sept. 25-28, presenting 40 films and videos at Landmark’s Ken and Hillcrest cinemas. The 2003 festival will open with Richard Day’s Girls Will Be Girls and close with Julie Johnson, starring Lili Taylor and Courtney Love. The full festival schedule is available at outfest.org/sdfest. The $25 Opening Night Ticket price includes the film screening and admission to an opening night party at Top of the Park. Opening night and individual tickets are now on sale at Obelisk Bookstore, 1029 University Ave.
Outfest San Diego is also seeking volunteers to work during this year’s festival. There will be one volunteer sign-up meeting, this Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the basement of The Center, 3909 Centre Street. Becoming an Outfest volunteer enables you to see movies at the festival free of charge. Positions available include box office attendants, ushers and ticket takers.
