A couple is recovering after being stabbed outside the CVS Pharmacy in Hillcrest just before 12:00 noon on Sunday, Feb. 3.

According to police, Donald Stewart, a school teacher, and his wife Caroline, a social worker who works with parolees and drug abusers, had just walked out of the CVS Pharmacy located at Fourth Avenue and Washington Street when a man approached and began stabbing them. Witnesses said instead of running away right after the attack, the assailant sat down on a nearby curb, began smoking a cigarette and waited for police to arrive.

The victims were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for their non-life-threatening wounds.

Officers arrested 31-year-old Jared Jacobson, who lives in the neighborhood and is a parolee.

There was no apparent motive for the stabbing, and police are still trying to figure out why Jacobson attacked the couple. Police said Jacobson is a parolee with a long rap sheet and was just released from jail on Jan. 27. He has served time for assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, theft, and various drug charges and weapons violations. During a stay at Donovan State Prison, he was convicted of a felony for obstructing an officer.

Donald was released from the hospital on Monday and spoke to the media about the attack. According to Donald, he didn’t even realize what was happening at first. He said the man came up from behind them, yelled obscenities and then started stabbing them. Stewart said his wife is still hospitalized and is in a lot of pain, but she is expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said that Jacobson will be charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held on $30,000 bail and is awaiting arraignment.
