Queer Abby signs off with Dinah Shore
Hello, fine readers. Welcome to the final installment of “Queer Abby.” It has been a pleasure writing for the Gay & Lesbian Times over the last few years, but I have decided to vacate my columnist position in order to give more time and energy to my hip-hop pursuits as MC Flow.
I’d like to thank everyone who read this column, and those who sent me event listings and feedback. It’s been really fun to represent the ladies and give a voice to the women’s community. I look forward to reading the next female columnist who steps up to the plate.
With that said, it seems only appropriate that I write my final column on the holy grail of all lesbian events – Dinah Shore Weekend! This weekend-long lesbo extravaganza is just around the corner and is set to take place March 28 through April 1 in Palm Springs.
This year you have your choice of events hosted by Club Skirts and PlanetOut, GirlBar and more. Personally, I think Club Skirts and PlanetOut are throwing the better parties. If I were going, I would buy tickets from them. They have the bigger stars and, more importantly, the better musicians.
Here are a few highlights from the Club Skirts/PlanetOut lineup:
Kathy Griffin, the funniest lady in Hollywood, will be making an appearance on the opening night of Dinah. She will be filming an episode of “My Life on the D-List” at the Official Meet and Greet Party on March 28. It doesn’t get much better than Kathy. Show up on opening night, grab a cocktail and be prepared to laugh your ass off!
The soulful songstress India.Arie will be performing with a full band and will sing songs from her Grammy-nominated album Testimony: Vol. I, Life & Relationship. She is definitely worth checking out!
The ladies of “The L-Word” will be in the house, so now’s your chance to bed Shane – I mean, Kate Moennig. She will be there, along with Leisha Hailey and the show’s creator, Ilene Chaiken.
Jackie Warner from Bravo’s hit show Workout” will also be on hand. She’s blonde, diesel and plain adorable. Let’s hope she leaves crazy Mimi at home when she makes her appearance at Dinah.
Dinah Shore is growing every year. If you plan on going and you don’t have your hotel reservations yet, pick up the phone now! The two most popular hotels, the Wyndham Hotel and the Doral Resort, are already sold out.
Also, remember numerous companies throw Dinah Shore parties. It’s important to research which parties you would like to attend and make sure you buy tickets to the correct event! Most of the information can be found online. For Club Skirts and PlanetOut, visit www.thedinah.com. For GirlBar events, visit www.dinahshoreweekend.com.
Here are a few other important tips to keep in mind when playing with the ladies of Dinah Shore:
You will need sunscreen
Dinah is famous for its pool parties, and the weekend is all about showing off your abdominal muscles and tattoos (if you have either – I don’t!). Make sure to load up on SPF. You wouldn’t want to miss out on opening night because of a bad sunburn.

The “D” in Dinah stands for drama!
Put all those lesbians together in one place and all hell is guaranteed to break loose. Dinah Shore is notorious for breaking up relationships. If you’re going with your girlfriend, be sure to have a conversation beforehand about what is and what is not cool behavior!
Network and enjoy!
Dinah Shore is full of women. In fact, there are so many people there each year that it can be a bit overwhelming. Take the opportunity to enjoy being surrounded by so many women – it doesn’t happen often! And take the time to meet some new people. Branch out and don’t just hang out with your San Diego friends.
