I don’t know about you, but it seems to me the travel bug has hit and everyone I know is booking a trip somewhere for one reason or another.
However, if you’re stuck in San Diego with no travel plans for the foreseeable future, don’t fret – there is plenty of entertainment, via land, sea and air, in and around 92103.
Culture & Cocktails
Quick! If it’s not too late, check out one of my favorite events in town, the San Diego Museum of Art’s “Culture & Cocktails,” tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 a person (museum staff advise buying your ticket before arriving), and include hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, music by live DJs and a glance at the newest exhibition in the museum. This edition of Culture & Cocktails features the national-touring exhibition of “Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life, 1990-2005,” which is a sure smash hit.
As an amateur photographer, I’ve always enjoyed Leibovitz’s work photographing celebrities and public figures for magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair. However, this collection of her impressive body of work also showcases personal photographs of her family and close friends. Check out http://www.sdmart.org for more info about the event and exhibition.
Wino for the local
When I think of going wine tasting, thoughts of Napa Valley and even Temecula come to mind. But did you know we can indulge in some wine tasting just a short distance away?

Escondido is the home to many wineries, including Orfila Vineyards. Daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., you can enjoy breathtaking views of the San Pasqual Valley while enjoying tastes of award-winning wines. The first taste is free; treat yourself to five more and a souvenir wine glass for $6. If you want to learn more about the winemaking process, take a free 25-minute tour at 2:00 p.m. daily. For directions and more info, visit http://www.orfila.com.
The Bernardo Winery, located within Rancho Bernardo, has been functioning for 116 years and houses village shops and a Farmers Market every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The tasting room is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. $5 gets you five tastes and a souvenir wine glass. For music lovers, Bernardo Winery will spotlight local jazz artists every Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (March-November). For directions and more info, visit http://www.bernardowinery.com.
A sUper showing
On March 3, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., enjoy another moRe sUper art show and celebrate the two year anniversary of Chiropractique Urban Retreat at 2301 El Cajon Boulevard. The art show features the photography of Matt Browne and the paintings of Lara Tamalunas, Jennifer Norton and Scott Holdredge. Sushi and sake martinis will be served, and black and white attire is requested. What gay guy doesn’t like a theme party? Not to mention, I’ve always been a fan of the artwork and parties moRe sUper promotes. For more info, e-mail info@moresuper.com
Thar he blows!
If the open sea sounds appealing, join Birch Aquarium at Scripps and San Diego Harbor Excursion, from now through March 31, on a naturalist-led whale watching tour, in celebration of WhaleFest, as the gray whales make their annual migration along our coast. Expeditions embark at 9:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. daily, and cost $27 per person on weekdays and $30 per person on weekends. Tours, which also explore the harbor, last three and a half hours and whale sightings are guaranteed, or you can ride again for free! For more info, call (619) 234-4111.
It’s a bird! No, it’s a plane!

You can travel by land and by sea, but if you want to experience a little air, jet over to one of my favorite “dive bars” in San Diego, the Aero Club. It’s a great place to layover for a quick brew or a chill night on the town. The bartenders have a friendly attitude, and the bar is decked out in a pilots-and-planes motif, with photographs on all of the walls, model planes hanging from the ceiling and Christmas lights strewn about.
The last time I checked out the joint with my friends, there were a few guys playing pool in one corner, another group of college-aged kids in the midst of their game of “A**hole,” and Etta James singing “At Last” on the jukebox. Definitely my kind of bar. And best of all, I can order one of my favorite “beer” drinks here, a Wyder’s Pear Cider with a Tanqueray floater.
So if you’re in the mood for some flying fun, stop by the Aero Club. It’s open daily from 2:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and located at 3365 India St.
GO TEAM!
I’ve discussed events and places relating to land, sea and air, but now I’m going to switch to another amazing trio: swim, bike, run. It is with great excitement that I tell you I am training for the Wildflower Triathlon as a member of Team In Training (TNT). This Olympic distance triathlon involves a 1-mile swim, 25-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run on May 6 in Lake San Antonio, Calf.
To help me cross the finish line, I joined TNT. TNT is part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest nonprofit health organization dedicated to finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I was surprised to learn an estimated 785,829 Americans are living with blood cancers. I am running this triathlon in honor of them and all individuals battling blood cancers.
As a member of TNT, I have committed to raise money in support of the society’s cause. This is where, I’m hoping, you come in. A donation will help the society’s mission of finding cures and saving lives. What’s more, it’s fully tax deductible. Please use the following link to donate online quickly and securely. Whatever amount you can give will help – every penny counts! Thank you, in advance, for your support! http://www.active.com/donate/tntsdh/tntsdhMHanash

Well, the end is here, and this month I’ll leave you with a quote from Australian footballer Tim Cahill:
“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.”
