Sapphic cinema: The Center will host a free monthly film night by and about women at 7 p.m. This month’s movie is Go Fish. Come with a date or come alone and meet someone new. One of the first movies made by lesbians for lesbians and about lesbians, Go Fish is a now-classic flick. What could be better than watching this, again or for the first time, with other queer women at the Wo-men’s Resource Cen-ter? Concessions will be available for sale with proceeds benefiting the WRC. Walk for recovery: The Walk for Recovery and Community Resource Expo will take place in Balboa Park. The three-mile walk begins at 8 a.m. and the expo will continue until 4 p.m. The walk is an educational resource/fund-raising event, designed as a celebration of recovery to demonstrate a sense of community and strength to those whose lives are affected by drug, alcohol and/or mental health-related issues. The walk route includes festive entertainment, cultural and traditional music, marching bands, cheerleaders, bagpipes, fiestas, dancers, clowns and much more. The Long Christmas Ride Home: The Diversionary Theatre will present a preview night to benefit The Center, featuring The Long Christmas Ride Home: A Puppet Play with Actors at 8 p.m. The play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel tells the story of what happens on a snowy Christmas Eve for a troubled family of five. It features puppets created by The Puppetry Center of San Diego. There will be a complimentary wine and cheese reception at 7 p.m. for those who purchase tickets through The Center’s Web site www.thecentersd.org. Learn freestyle wrestling: The San Diego Bulldogs Wrestling Club (SDBWC) will be hosting a freestyle wrestling clinic for beginners in the main auditorium of The Center from 1-4 p.m. Attendees will learn the basic rules of freestyle wrestling, how to get started in the sport, and have a chance to get on the mat and practice basic moves. Bulldogs wrestlers will also show off their skills in a freestyle wrestling demonstration. The clinic is free and attendees who join the SDBWC will receive $10 off membership dues. Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go Zine Picnic: Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go will be hosting a picnic at Sixth and Laurel avenues in Balboa Park from 1-4 p.m. Grrrl Zines A-Go-Go is an all-women workshop group that has been facilitating workshops in the community since 2002. The group focuses on the empowerment of young women through the production of fanzines and self-published works. Anyone interested can come to buy zines, trade zines, read zines and make zines, while enjoying the company of other women. Don’t know what a “zine” is? Come and find out. Women’s country-western dance: The Women’s Resource Center at The Center is offering new women’s country-western dance classes from 7-8:30 p.m. Participants in the class will learn how to two-step, western waltz, shadow and line dance. Beginners are always encouraged and welcome to attend. No partner is necessary, just a willingness to learn and have fun. Leather or leather-like soles are suggested. POZibilities bonfire: San Diego POZibilities (SDP), a social group for HIV-positive men, will host its monthly bonfire at Bonita Cove at 6 p.m. This is a free potluck event and everyone who plans to attend should bring something to share, such as wood for the fire, a chair, blanket or picnic items. The Secret: Find out what all of the buzz is about when VISION, a Center for Spiritual Living, presents a special viewing of The Secret at 7 p.m. A question and answer session will follow the free showing of the film, along with a discussion about the ancient philosophy that is now being talked about on “Oprah,” “Larry King Live,” and in Newsweek and The New York Times. Geeky Grrlz: Fans of fiction, fantasy and Sci-fi will gather at The Center at 7 p.m. for Geeky Grrlz. This fun new social group is open to all “geeky girls” and their allies. Women from all over the San Diego community will gather to watch movies, play games and deconstruct women’s role in Sci-fi and fantasy. Bodies of Art: The Rubber Rose will host “Bodies of Art,” an uncensored art exhibition for adults only, from 6-10 p.m. This is a kick-off event for the Artists Open Studio, which happens at the fetish boutique and gallery two days later. There will be something for everyone – gay and straight, male and female. Ten artists will be featured, each with unique styles and perspectives on the beauty of the very naked human body.
