Hillcrest Centennial Sock Hop: Jump ’n’ jive at Hillcrest’s first Centennial Dance at the Joyce Beers Community Center from 6:30-9 p.m. Do the Stroll, Mashed Potato and Twist the night away, as DJ, diva and songstress Laura Jane spins tunes from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Refreshments will be provided by Trader Joe’s and a taco bar by Baja Betty’s. Admission is $6 for singles or $10 for couples. All ages are welcome. Artists Open Studio: “BigTom” Lombardo will present the Artists Open Studio with more than 60 local artists and craftspeople at The Center from 2-7 p.m. A variety of media will be shown and will include mobiles, polymer clay, painting, drawing, beadwork, glass, ceramics, metalwork, textiles, woodwork, sculpture, jewelry, crafts, collage, photography and henna tattoos. This event provides many new and “struggling” artists with an affordable venue to showcase and sell their art. Refreshments will be provided and admission is free. Jewmongous: Sean Altman will bring his newly erected concert “Jewmongous” to Belly Up in Solana Beach. The doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and the show will start at 5:30 p.m. This is a Jew-themed comedy song variety show, featuring Altman and other comedy songsters. Studio gallery grand opening: Ricardo Vela Studio Gallery, “a place where photography, art and community merge into one,” will be celebrating its grand opening from 3-10 p.m. Not only is this a chance to see some phenomenal photographic works of art, but a percentage of all sales from the day of the opening will benefit “Eunime por Tijuana,” an organization that helps children living with HIV. Ballroom and Latin dance class: An alternative to the already existing club and country-western scene, this sports and social club meets at Shooterz bar in North Park. The class starts at 7 p.m. For those less experienced, a practicing party is held afterward at 8:15 p.m. The group focuses primarily on international ballroom and Latin dancing, and participants are welcome to come alone or with a dance partner. Log Cabin Republicans social: The Log Cabin Republicans of San Diego will hold its monthly social mixer event at Bourbon Street from 6:30-8 p.m. The free event is open to anyone interested in meeting other GLBT Republicans. Guys, games and grub: The Center’s Men’s Advisory Committee will host a game night at The Center at 6:30 p.m. Men of all ages in the community are invited to hang out, play some board games, listen to music, have a few drinks and eat. Flicks is sponsoring the event and will be providing the group with all the food and fixings for dinner. There will be an assortment of games to play, but those who attend are invited to bring their favorite games to share with the guys.
