Gay Men’s Chorus gets ready to ‘Fly’
The Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego will commemorate 15 years of singing with the inaugural concert of its 15th anniversary season, “Watch Me Fly!” to be presented in Hillcrest on both Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15. The San Diego Festival Orchestra will accompany the 75-member Gay Men’s Chorus during its performance of “Metamorphosis” both nights.
GMCSD will perform for the first time in St. Paul’s Cathedral. The chorus hopes to make the magic of flight come alive as it sings well-known music written about flying. Featured selections will include “Dancing Through Life” and “Defying Gravity” from the smash-hit Broadway musical Wicked, and Josh Groban’s hit songs, “To Where You Are” and “The Prayer.” Other popular selections will include “Up, Up and Away,” as well as the timeless classic “Over the Rainbow.”
“Watch Me Fly!” will also feature the California premiere of “Metamorphosis,” written by Robert Seeley and Robert Espindola. Through its music, this multi-movement work for men’s chorus and full orchestra relates the story of the journey of many gay men through self-discovery, acceptance and ultimate triumph as a proud community. “Metamorphosis” is an uplifting piece with a universal message about the soaring of the human spirit that is hoped will inspire those who hear it.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is located at 2728 Sixth Ave. in Hillcrest

San Diego Pride to produce ‘2007 Pride Guide’
San Diego Pride has assembled a team of agencies to produce the official souvenir informational booklet, the 2007 Pride Guide. The 64-page magazine will be available starting the last week of June, with 40,000 copies distributed free at locations in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Palm Springs, San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix.
The Pride Guide is San Diego’s official and comprehensive guide to the 2007 San Diego Pride celebration. This year’s Pride weekend, titled “United For Equality,” is scheduled for July 21-22.
The guide will include details about the parade and festival, a festival map, entertainment schedules and a full calendar of July Pride events that include theater productions, Pride concerts, art happenings, a Front Runners 5K run, plus official Pride parties and club events. It will also showcase this year’s Pride award recipients, celebrity and community grand marshals and the 2007 inspiration couples.
“We are pleased to have top-quality professionals working together to assemble the guide,” said Ron deHarte, executive director of San Diego Pride.
The production team includes Jonathan Young, who will oversee the layout and design, and Ad Ink, which will oversee ad sales for the program.
According to Nancy Moors of Ad Ink, non-profit organizations will receive a 25 percent discount on ad rates if they meet the early-bird deadline of April 19. The final deadline for all other ads is May 14.
“Ads in the official Pride Guide are the ideal way to reach event participants, to attract traffic to your booth at the festival or to promote your business,” added deHarte.
Pride is also seeking volunteers to sign up for the beverage gardens, safety (crowd management, monitors and security) and ticket sales.
For information on advertising in the Pride Guide, call Moors at 619-260-1929 or e-mail info@sdpride.org. To inquire about volunteer opportunities, visit the Pride Web site at www.sandiegopride.org.
