Chicano Park Day
The community of Barrio Logan and Chicano movement activists will celebrate the 37th annual Chicano Park Day on Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Chicano Park was founded in 1970 when the Barrio Logan community and Chicano movement activists joined forces to protest the construction of a California Highway Patrol station on the present park site. At the time, the highway patrol office was the final insult to a community that had already been degraded by the demolition of hundreds of homes to make way for Interstate 5; the San Diego-Coronado Bridge; the placement of toxic industries and junkyards; and a lack of community facilities, proper schools, jobs, and social and medical services.
The struggle for Chicano Park came to symbolize the Chicano Mexicano people’s struggle for self-determination and self-empowerment. The park has received national and international acclaim as a major outdoor public art site known for its powerful mural paintings depicting the past and present struggle of Mexican and Chicano history.
Every year, the community of Barrio Logan, the greater community of San Diego and people throughout the country come together to celebrate the takeover of the area that has become Chicano Park. This year’s Chicano Park Day will feature events for the whole family, including traditional music and dance, and an extraordinary performance of indigenous Aztec “danza.” Contemporary music will be performed by several local and regional artists. Also featured will be poetry readings and guest speakers, including a keynote address by human rights activist Enrique Morones of Border Angels. In addition, there will be a classic lowrider car display presented by Amigos Car Club, food, arts and craft vendors, and children’s arts and craft workshops led by noted Chicano artist/muralist Victor Ochoa.
Chicano Park is located off Interstate 5, Cesar Chavez Parkway exit, under the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge.

New fall prevention program for seniors launches Matter of Balance
To prevent falls among seniors, two dozen volunteers and professionals met on March 28 at the Neighborhood House Senior Center (Metro) to launch the federally funded program, A Matter of Balance.
San Diego County’s Department of Aging and Independence Services (AIS) has teamed with Silver Age Yoga to deliver the program at four carefully selected senior centers in the county.
The event was attended by both AIS and County Board of Supervisors representatives. Silver Age Yoga, because of its extensive and well-received health enhancing services to the community, was selected by AIS to administer this three-year program.
A Matter of Balance will be taught by volunteer coaches who are trained to teach the program to seniors. At this event each of the 13 coaches demonstrated his or her newly acquired teaching skills to the great satisfaction of the audience. Supervisor Greg Cox’s representative, Luis Monteagudo, handed the coaches their certificates.
The first round of the three-year program began the first week of April at the Poway Senior Center, the Riford Senior Center in La Jolla, and at both the Neighborhood House Senior Center and Imperial Beach Senior Center.
Each center will host three, eight-week sessions. The sessions are free to all seniors interested in participating.
