Portrait of a community
Published Thursday, 12-Apr-2007 in issue 1007
Name: Bob Woods
Age: 48
Self-definition: Single, self-employed gay man surviving in San Diego, surrounded by some great individuals who keep me grounded (or at least try to).
Where were you at 9:00 a.m. last Sunday morning?
Having coffee and dishing with my good friend Jerry, a weekend ritual in the burb of University Heights.
What person has influenced you more than any other, and how?
My parents. They raised me right and taught me to say what I think, for better or worse. Especially my Dad, who built end tables and assorted furniture as a hobby, and who would be amazed that I build picture frames for a living.
When do you feel unequal?
When national politicians want to amend the Constitution to make me less equal
Where were you last Wednesday at noon?
Working at my shop, Framing Creations, in the heart of University Heights
When was the last time you felt proud?
I feel proud daily. It’s who I am and will always be.
If there was a defining moment in your life, what was it?
When I decided, with the help of my best friend Scott, to open my own frame shop, and having it succeed far beyond what I ever thought it would!
Where were you at 10 p.m. last Friday night?
At home with my 13-year-old poodle/bichon, Jasper. He was asleep, and I was watching mindless television. Wow, that doesn’t sound much different from my last date, back in the ’80s [laughing].
What is your most immediate goal?
My most immediate goal is to catch up with all my work, and, maybe, just maybe, take a weekend off and go to Palm Springs for the first time in my life. I want to just take life a little easier and smell the roses and who knows. That’s the great thing about goals, they are always changing.
When do you feel total joy?
At work: when a client is pleased with the work I have done for them. In life: when I am with friends and we are just hanging out, laughing, talking and razzing each other, absolutely convinced we are kings (or queens, as the case may be!) of the world.
