Vintage Religion opened its doors in North Park in October 2006. Store owner, Philip Shirk, said his merchandise is influenced not only by different religions and cultures of the world, but the concept is based on his own home.
“I have collected religious artifacts, antiques and statuary for years,” said Shirk, who knows firsthand that people are very passionate about their own religion and/or spirituality. “I was concerned that customers might be offended by the blending of religions, but I have found the opposite is true.”
The North Park resident, who moved to San Diego from Tempe, Ariz., 16 years ago, has been well-received by customers and the community. “They say to be successful in business, you must be passionate about your work. I embrace this concept and I believe it is evident in every aspect of the store,” he remarked.
Shirk, who has worked in retail management for 15 years, said he dreamed of owning his own business his entire life. “I can remember, as a kid, playing store with my sister, Dina.”
The catalyst for him opening his own business was an insufficient quality of life working for traditional department stores. “I was tired of getting few days off, working extremely late/early hours and not being provided the resources to deliver the quality of customer service I expect as a consumer.”
Currently, Vintage Religion’s assortment includes Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Jewish items. Additionally, an entire section of the store is dedicated to Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Frida Kahlo, with merchandise that includes vintage art prints, apparel, jewelry, greeting cards, statuary and original art work by local artists. Additionally, an assortment of vintage Russian icons and contemporary nesting dolls/lacquered eggs is available.
“As a new business owner, I solicit regular feedback from my customers and make adjustment to the inventory and assortment based on their comments. I am flexible with my business plan, and I make changes to ensure that I succeed and deliver what my customer expects.”
