An armed robber who robbed the F Street Bookstore in North Park and committed five other robberies was sentenced to 27 years in state prison.
Daryl Keith Woods, 45, has a long criminal record and was convicted of committing 11 robberies in 1992. Woods pleaded guilty to robbing the adult bookstore and to five other hold-ups on Jan. 30 He asked for immediate sentencing. San Diego Superior Court Judge Jeff Fraser complied, and, in addition to the prison sentence, fined Woods $1,140.
Woods wrote a letter to the judge saying he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs during all the robberies he’s committed. “I am an addict,” Woods wrote, saying he has never been treated for the problem.
Woods suggested that he be given a suspended 31-year prison term and placed on probation so he could live in a residential drug or alcohol treatment center. Fraser denied probation.
Woods held up the F Street Bookstore on July 6, 2006, committed six other robberies, and was arrested months after according to court records. Friends and family posted a $300,000 bond, so Woods was free for most of 2007.
In November, 2007, however, Woods was arrested for a robbery in Chula Vista, and his bail was increased to $3 million.
In 1990, Woods escaped from a county jail in El Cajon by punching through the walls. He was on the seventh floor, and lowered himself down with bed sheets he had tied together. He fell several stories and broke his ankle. He was arrested and later charged for his attempted escape.
Meanwhile, the trial date for another robber at F Street Bookstore is set for Feb. 14. Tiano Alexander Durham, 20, of San Diego, has pleaded not guilty to holding up the North Park adult bookstore on April 18, 2007 around midnight.
San Diego Police officers shot and killed the getaway driver in that hold-up after he pulled a gun and fired when an officer approached him. The shots fired by the driver, Maurice Antoine White, 30, missed the officer. White died at the scene.
Durham is suspected of jumping over the counter at the University Avenue store and taking money from the cash register. Durham managed to escape, but was arrested April 26 at his home in the Bay Terraces area.
He remains in the South Bay Detention Facility on $500,000 bail.
