Basketball enters its stretch run
Published Thursday, 14-Feb-2008 in issue 1051
As San Diego Hoops enters its final four weeks of regular season play, team Pomegranite seems to have decisively clinched the No. 1 spot, but the cluster of teams in the middle of the pack means the final seeding for playoffs will likely come down to the final week of games.
The Hoops play a regular season of 14 weeks and final standings are used to determine seeds for a single-elimination playoff tournament. The team in the No. 1 seed will get a first-round bye. With eight teams in the league, that first round bye gives the top seed an automatic bid into the final four.
With only four weeks of regular season play left, it’s still anyone’s game, said Chad Hermandorfer, assistant commissioner.
“The league is very balanced,” he said. “A lot of the games come down to the wire, and any one of us can beat any one us.”
Pointing to Pomegranite’s commanding lead (at one point the team amassed a 6-1 record), Hermandorfer said, “Even they have had close games.”
“It’s not like they went out and blew everyone off the court,” he said. “A lot of their games have been very close, and could have just as easily gone the other way.”
Regardless, Hermandorfer was quick to praise the league’s top team. “They’re maybe the most athletic team on the floor,” he said.
The San Diego Hoops was founded in 1999 by Mark Jacobson. That year, only five teams competed in a 10-week schedule. In time, the league’s size has grown to eight teams playing a full 18-week schedule.
This season tipped off Nov. 15 and the finals will be played April 3. All games are played in the main auditorium at Alliant University in the Scripps Ranch area. Admission is free, and games are played on Thursdays.
The league will take this weekend off, but the schedule for the rest of the regular season can be found at www.sdhoops.net along with updated scores and standings.

San Diego Hoops teams are gearing up for the season’s end.
This weekend the San Diego Wrestling Club (formerly, the San Diego Bulldogs) will be hosting the 2nd Annual SDWC Wrestling Tournament.
According to Greg Lines, the club’s coach, the tournament will take place Saturday, Feb. 16 in the main auditorium of The Center in Hillcrest. The tournament will be the centerpiece of four days of wrestling events, including a freestyle wrestling clinic and a beach wrestling/picnic event.
The weekend kicks-off Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. with a “Meet, Greet and Roll” wrestling practice.
On Friday, at 6 p.m., the home team will host a freestyle wrestling clinic along with tournament weigh-ins.
Tournament bouts begin Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. and the post-tournament barbecue will be hosted by the club on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. with a beach wrestling/picnic outing. (Location is TBD.)
All wrestling events, except beach wrestling, will take place in the main auditorium of The Center in Hillcrest (3909 Centre St., San Diego, CA 92103). A suggested $5 donation at the door will get you in to watch the action.
For more information on the tournament, visit www.sdwrestling.org.
A note of thanks
If you read any other part of this magazine, you’ve seen advertisements and mentions for Searching For Mr. Right, a play I wrote, directed and produced which ran Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 7-10, at the Diversionary Theatre.
Many of the sports organizations I’ve written about actually took the time to come out and see what it was all about. I am proud to say the show was a success, selling out all four nights (we actually had to turn people away at the door). To all of those who came out, please know you helped make my dream come true. I hope you enjoyed the show!
