It was a busy weekend for GLBT sports in America’s Finest City. The basketball and tennis leagues crowned new champions while the winners of this weekend’s games in the flag football league conjured images of the heady days of Air Coryell.

San Diego Hoops ended its season with the championship final last Thursday. The game pitted Pomegranite against Morgan Stanley after the two battled their way through the playoffs, with Pomegranite ultimately winning the title.

At the end of the regular season, the eventual champions shared a 9-3 record with rival Big Mike’s Sports Rub. Because of an earlier victory over Big Mike’s, Pomegranite earned first place and entered the postseason as the No. 1 seed. That meant a first-round bye, so the team was well-rested for its first tournament game.

Big Mike’s Sports Rub wasn’t so lucky. By virtue of its earlier loss to Pomegranite, the team entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed, and had to win two games to get a shot at a rematch and the title. Big Mike’s sailed through the first round, but lost to the No. 3 seed, Morgan Stanley, in the quarterfinals, setting up a final between the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds.

While Pomegranite entered the postseason No. 1, remarkably, it was a feat accomplished without a single player among the league’s top scorers. Phil Jackson would be proud.

In contrast, Big Mike’s boasted the top two players in the league. Jay Irby had 197 points, which was nearly 30 points better than his coach, and the league’s second-most prolific scorer, Larry Granville.

Also last weekend was the championship round of Team Tennis. Match play consisted of 10 singles matches and five doubles matches between The Juicers and The Spice Girls.

The Juicers were dominant early, winning all five doubles matches. That meant a victory in three singles matches, and the championship was theirs. For coach Dave Bair, there was no disappointment, as the Juicers went on to win a total of five singles matches and the title.

For Spice Girls coach Leonard Trinh, it was bittersweet. While his team took second, one member of his group, E. Bauer, took home the league’s MVP nod.

A total of eight teams and 80 players competed during what was to be a seven-week schedule. Rain hampered that plan and extended the season two weeks.

One of the things I don’t do in this column (and probably should), is highlight an athlete of the week, picking out one who played particularly well, and briefly sharing his or her accomplishments. In reality, though, it’s a good thing I don’t, because after this weekend it would be a tough choice.

Would I pick Beau Upchurch? He powered three home-run blasts over the left field fence during his softball team’s opening day last Sunday. Then on Saturday, despite pulling a hamstring during the game, threw for five touchdown passes for his flag football team, as the Hawthorn’s Fusion won a squeaker, 34-32 over the Baja Betty’s Bandits.

Maybe I would pick Jared Duncan. He too is a softball player and a quarterback, and he threw seven touchdown passes as the Pecs Wolf Pack humbled the Flicks Falcons 47-20.

Some consideration would also have to go to Eric Reissner. He is another multi-sport athlete, and as the quarterback of the Stonewall Citizen’s Patrol, may have had the best day of the lot. He powered his team to a 52-25 undressing of the Urban Mo’s MoFos.

Boy, it’s a good thing I don’t do that whole “athlete of the week” thing, because this week I just wouldn’t know who to highlight.
