The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA is going crazy for canines during the month of October by hosting a unique dog adoption event themed around the German Oktoberfest, called “Barktoberfest 2010.” To celebrate “Adopt a Dog Month” and to help find homes for the many wonderful dogs and puppies at their campuses in both San Diego and Oceanside , the San Diego Humane Society will hold the annual “Barktoberfest” adoption event Oct. 9-10, 2010. The weekend-long celebration of all things canine will take place at the San Diego Humane Society’s Gaines Campus on Saturday, Oct. 9 and on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the North Campus in Oceanside. In addition to the day-long celebrations at each location, special adoptions incentives will be offered on dog and puppy adoptions throughout the entire month of October: adoption fees will be just $19 for dogs over 7 months old and $99 for puppies 6 months and younger.

Front Runners & Walkers San Diego is a running and walking club for lesbians, gay men, their families and friends. Join them for weekly fun runs and walks! They meet three times a week at the southeast corner of Sixth Avenue and Laurel Street in Balboa Park for fun runs of three to six miles, and walks of two to three miles. You don’t have to be a member to check them out, but if you decide to keep coming, members get a directory and newsletters. Broadway Bound follows Eugene Morris Jerome, of the Brighton Beach Jeromes. The path he’s on is writing rather than baseball but he is still obsessed with un-gettable girls – and what were once the musings of a teenage boy are now the bread and butter of his profession. When he and his brother Stanley get their big break as radio writers, the family’s struggles become fodder for anyone to hear, and Eugene is forced to face the reality that even while living at home, with adulthood comes consequences.

Simon LeVay is a New York Times best-selling author and neuroscientist who has served on the faculty at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Harvard Medical School.
