Cyberspace predator sentenced to one year
Man met victims on popular gay Web site
Published Thursday, 13-Mar-2008 in issue 1055
A cyberspace predator who stole credit cards and checks from gay men he met on a popular gay Web site was sentenced Feb. 25 to one year in jail, and ordered to pay $11,944.53 back to four victims.
Timothy Williams, 37, was ordered to start paying the men back at a rate of $200 per month after his sentence ends. San Diego Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sontag placed him on three years probation and ordered him to pay a $1,126 fine.
Williams was arrested Jan. 10 and pleaded guilty Jan. 24 to forgery, burglary and grand theft. Five counts of grand theft, forgery, and burglary were dismissed. The burglary charges allege he entered the victims’ homes with the intent to commit a crime.
The victims did not have to testify in court.
Williams met all four men on Adam4Adam.com. The men invited Williams to their homes, according to his probation report. The first incident occurred on Sept. 15, 2007, shortly after Williams opened a bank account. While at one of the victims’ homes, he located the man’s checkbook, tore a check out and made it out to himself.
Williams met another man on Oct. 5 and also took a check from him. One victim noticed there was a discrepancy in his bank account but didn’t know what had happened until a San Diego Police detective contacted him.
Williams told a probation officer that one man gave him a credit card to use. He used it at bars in Hillcrest and Normal Heights, and at restaurants and grocery stores. The victim told the probation officer he did not give Williams his credit card.
Police discovered a 32-inch television purchased with the stolen money in Williams’ Market Street residence.
Williams previously worked as a loan consultant and a customer service representative at Capital One, according to the report.
Sontag gave Williams credit for spending 69 days in jail including time off for good behavior. Williams was ordered to pay $1,127 in probation costs. The judge also ordered him to attend an anti-theft class.
Williams had no prior record. He remains in the George F. Bailey Detention Facility without bail.
