Eat your heart out
More than 70 popular restaurants will dole out their latest and greatest dishes at this year’s 17th annual Mama’s Day event, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., May 9, at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Proceeds will benefit Mama’s Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that cooks and delivers nutritional meals to clients with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses throughout San Diego County.
Participants include a host of casual and fine-dining eateries such as Ono Sushi, Blanca, Jade Theater, Urban Mo’s, The Tractor Room, A.R. Valentien, Chive, The French Gourmet, George’s at the Cove and more.
The event is presented by Sycuan Resort & Casino. Tickets are $125 each. They can be purchased online at www.mamaskitchen.org, or by calling 619-233-6262.
Chocolate mama
And speaking of Mother’s Day, the GLBT community’s esteemed chocolatier William Gustwiller is planning a five-course, chocolate-kissed brunch for the maternal occasion on May 10 and 11, at his new café, Eclipse Chocolat. How does chocolate-rubbed bacon sound? The unique menu is still in the works and will focus largely on breakfast items. 2121 El Cajon Blvd., 619.504.5310. More details will soon be posted on www.eclipsechocolat.com.
High-style Italian fare in Point Loma
Liberty Station’s first non-franchised restaurant, Solare Ristorante & Lounge, opens for lunch and dinner on Monday, April 14. The 4,000-square-foot space is appointed with customized teak furnishings, fountains imported from Bali and an exhibition grill bar. The menu features a litany of original and classic Italian dishes “with global influences” crafted by Milanese chef-owner Stefano Ceresoli and co-executive chef Mark Pelliccia. 2820 Roosevelt St., 619-270-9670.
Café One Three changes hands
Restaurateur Stan Fevens loved Café One Three so much that he ended up buying the place last month. Having owned a few restaurants in Canada and formerly co-owning Urban Grind, he’ll retain about 50 percent of One Three’s menu while adding several Italian and Greek dishes to the list. In addition, he’s reinstated brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and has kept most of the staff, including two senior sous chefs.
Culinary sins
Men’s Health Magazine recently released its first annual list of the 10 worst foods in America based on caloric impact, as well as fat and carb counts. Topping the list was Outback Steakhouse’s Aussie cheese fries with Ranch dressing, which pack a whopping 2,900 calories per order. Chili’s “awesome onion blossom” ranked second at 2,710 calories per order. Surprisingly, the often-scorned Big Mac and Whopper were spared in the assessment, losing out to the Carl’s Jr. double six-dollar burger, which adds to your girth 1,520 calories and 111 grams of saturated fat. Wine tasting for the budget conscious
Lindsay Pomeroy of Wine Smarties will conduct a blind tasting of affordable wines priced under $25 to help vino lovers choose quality brands without fracturing their budgets. The class will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., April 20, at Wine Steals Point Loma, 2970 Truxtun Road. Register by calling 619-955-8884, or visit www.vinvillage.com.
