Morning starts
Looking to dodge the cattle lines for breakfast after rolling out of bed late on weekends? Consider these tasty, no-hassle discoveries:
Shoestring fries topped with sausage gravy, Mahon cheese and roasted mushrooms at Alchemy in South Park, where it’s relatively easy to land a table after 10 a.m. Other dishes of note include the steak and cheese omelet, the huevos rancheros with pork carnitas and the “red dragon” hot pastrami with sauerkraut and beer-mustard cheese on rye. 1503 30th St., 619-255-0616.
The Ruby Room in Hillcrest offers a decadent cure for Sunday-morning hangovers with all-you-can-consume eggs and beer (or mimosas) from noon to 3 p.m., on Sundays. The cost is $20. 1271 University Ave., 619-487-9383.
Carnivores can unleash their appetites at Bully’s East in Mission Valley sans the crowds until 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Meaty breakfasts include prime rib has, New York steak and eggs and a mounding of chilaquiles loaded with chicken breast. 2401 Camino del Rio South, 619-291-2665.
For the love of Mama
Dozens of restaurants and top chefs will put their best foot forward for the annual Mama’s Day fundraiser, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday (May 7) at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla Aventine. This year’s extravaganza, titled “A Taste of Tradition,” will also feature live entertainment, silent auctions and prize drawings. Culinary samples will abound. Tickets are available at the door for $150 per person. All proceeds to benefit Mama’s Kitchen, a non-profit organization that prepares and delivers food to adults and children affected by AIDS or cancer. 619-233-6262.
Free from the grills
As a way of thanking its customers, Iowa Meat Farms in Mission Gorge and Seisel’s Old Fashion Meats in Bay Park will dole out samples of grilled meats and veggies from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for the remaining Saturdays in May. Exotic meats such as ostrich, boar and alligator will among the freebies on certain weeks. The grilling action takes place in the stores’ parking lots. 6041 Mission Gorge Road and 4131 Ashton St., 619-281-5766.
Sausage and biscotti
The streets of Little Italy will make way for the 17th annual Sicilian Festival, featuring food booths, wine and beer gardens and a new Puma soccer-fan zone. The festivities will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 23, along India Street in the heart of Little Italy. Free parking will be available in the north lot of the County Administration Buildiing on Pacific Highway, with complimentary shuttle service to the festival.
‘Farm Hour’ at Café 21
The popular organic café with Azerbaijan roots has launched its version of happy hour, calling it instead “farm hour.” From 3 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, the Normal Heights eatery offers half-price discounts on wine and beer and specials on dishes constructed with ingredients picked up the same day from local farms. 2736 Adams Ave., 619-640-2121.
