Product: French Toast Waffles
Description: Eggo’s take on what happens when “waffles and French toast collide.” Frozen product contains eight “waffles” shaped like bread slices.
Preparation summary: Brown in toaster at lightest setting
High points: Clever concept, but nothing more
Low points: Doesn’t take like waffles or French toast, but rather resembles the doughy innards to an overly sweet cinnamon bun. The cloying residual aftertaste is rather disturbing, as it doesn’t fade quickly.
Average Retail Price: $3.39
Availability: Major grocery stores
Product: Chicken Vindaloo
photo
Description: Rice bowl containing 11 ounces of vegetables and white chicken meat in vindaloo curry sauce by Trader Joe’s.
Preparation summary: Microwave on high for four minutes. Stir and remove lid, then continue heating another four minutes.
High points: Only three grams of fat per container
Low points: Lacks the fiery punch typical of vindaloo curry – a far cry from the real deal. Tastes pretty much like old-fashion peas and carrots with rice and boiled bits of chicken tossed in.
Average Retail Price: $2.99
Availability: Trader Joe’s
Product: Michael Angelo’s Vegetable Lasagna
Description: Frozen, single serving of meatless lasagna layered with seven vegetables and low-fat cheeses
photo
Preparation summary: Puncture the plastic seal and microwave on high for five to seven minutes; can also be baked in the conventional oven at 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.
High points: Broccoli, zucchini, carrots and cauliflower are among the veggies that escape sogginess during the cooking process. The marinara sauce is low in acid and made with a touch of honey, offering a mild ride for heartburn sufferers.
Low points: The low-fat cheeses (ricotta, mozzarella and Romano) are scant and tasteless and don’t melt properly, and the pasta sheets don’t cut well with a fork.
Average Retail Price: $4.99
Availability: Major grocery stores
Product: Deluxe Mint Chocolate Chip Light Ice Cream
Description: Half-gallon cardboard box of mint chocolate chip ice cream with 50 percent less fat and 25 percent less calories compared to leading brands.
Preparation summary: Ready to serve
photo
High points: No fake sweeteners! Fat and calorie counts are diminished because of skim milk and soy in the recipe. Ice cream tastes reasonably minty. Chocolate chips are aplenty.
Low points: Don’t expect the creamy consistency of full-fat ice cream. The texture is instead similar to that of whipped frosting. And because of the skim milk contained in the product, the ice cream reveals a low melting point if you don’t get it home fast from the grocery store.
Average Retail Price: $2.50
Availability: Trader Joe’s
