Fair food gone wild
The San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds next month will outdo itself with new junk food offerings tailored for iron stomachs. If last year’s deep-fried Twinkies didn’t grab you, how about kicking off your Fun Zone visit with deep-fried Caesar salad? Other new edibles include White Castle sliders, fish sliders and mac-n-cheese on a stick, all destined for the deep fryer as well. In addition, you’ll find grilled meats at the “world’s largest barbecue” launched from a big rig truck. The fair runs from June 14 to July 6. For more information, call 858-755-1161.
Green pizza
California will see the first arrival of Pizza Fusion, due to open next month in Hillcrest. The Florida-based company adheres to strict environmental standards, using food containers made from cornstarch, eating utensils made from potatoes and staff uniforms tailored from 100 percent organic cotton. Food deliveries are made in a fleet of hybrid vehicles, and the pizzas and other menu items use ingredients in their purest forms, sans any pesticides, nitrates and growth hormones. Founded in 2006 by two entrepreneurs in Florida, there are presently six locations throughout the country. Pizza Fusion opens at 3827 Fifth Ave. For more information, visit the Web site at www.pizzafusion.com.
Singin’ the blues at Terra

Get ready for fried Fair food
San Diego blues musicians will perform at Terra for its 10th annual summer barbecue series, held from 6 to 9 p.m. every Thursday, beginning tonight. Rotating menus will feature St. Louis-style ribs and other proteins, plus side dishes such as citrus coleslaw, corn on the cob, Cuban black beans, ginger fruit salad and more. 1270 Cleveland Ave., 619-293-7088.
Safe cooking
The first environmentally friendly, non-stick coating used in cooking has been recently introduced by GreenPan Cookware, which replaces synthetic chemicals with a ceramic-based technology called Thermolon. The cookware collection includes pans for roasting and frying as well as double boilers steamers and casserole crocks. Their surfaces do not break down over time, and even better, consumers can skip the fat and oils when cooking up that next grilled cheese sandwich. Due to arrive this fall at specialty shops in San Diego, the cookware is currently available for purchase on the HSN Network and on the Web site: www.hsn.com.
Learn from the Chefs
San Diego Kitchen & Bath brings together home cooks and accomplished chefs in a new 1,600-square-foot space designated for its recently launched “Cooking With Class” series. The room is equipped with state-of-the-art Dacor appliances, an indoor barbecue and several viewing screens. May-June classes cover everything from sushi making and Tuscan cooking to constructing 30-minute meals and preparing seafood. And what students learn about, they get to eat. Upcoming guest chefs include Brian Malarkey of Oceanaire Seafood Room, Jeffrey Strauss of Pamplemousse and Italian cooking expert Nadia Frigeri. Call or visit the Web site for a detailed list of classes. 8290 Miramar Road, 858-578-2665, www.sdcookingwithclass.com.
