Students ring the dinner bell
The under-publicized Palette restaurant hiding on the second floor of the Art Institute of California-San Diego in Mission Valley has switched from lunch to dinner service. Open to the public Mondays through Wednesdays, the restaurant is fully staffed by enrollees of the institute. The dinner menu remains in place for the next several months before the students switch back to lunch hours. All profits go toward the institute’s culinary scholarship fund. Reservations are required. 7650 Mission Valley Road, 858-598-1405.
Island hopping
Famed chef Roy Yamaguchi will celebrate the cuisine of the Hawaiian Islands with five “outrageous dishes” paired with Oberon wines at the restaurants that bear his name in La Jolla and at the recently opened Downtown location. The dinner, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Aug. 6, will feature a specialty sushi roll, yellow fin and ahi steak cassoulet, smoked pork shank, lamb loin and more. The cost is $85 per person, or $55 without wine selections. Roy’s is located at 333 W. Harbor Drive, (619-239-7697) and 8760 Genesee Ave. (858-455-1616).
Pasta at Pride
Viva Pasta in Hillcrest makes its Pride festival debut this weekend, on July 19 and 20, ranking as the sole pasta stand among nearly 30 other food vendors. The festival will also feature expanded beverage gardens and a first-ever Wine Steals Grotto, where visitors can enjoy tastings from more than 90 wineries. Green eatin’ in Liberty Station
The eco-friendly Tender Greens opened recently in Point Loma’s Liberty Station, offering locally grown produce, naturally raised meats, line-caught fish and organic wines and microbrews, served in a casual atmosphere that captures the area’s historic Mission-style architecture. The eatery takes a highly green approach in its operations, using only biodegradable detergents and cleaners, recycled napkins, organic cotton uniforms and solar panels. Open daily for lunch and dinner. 2400 Historic Decatur Road, #104, 619-226-6254.
Osetra remodel
Home to prime-aged steaks, fresh seafood and wine angles that soar up and down a three-story wine tower to retrieve bottles, Osetra Watergrill in the Gaslamp District has bid farewell to its glass and blue color scheme in lieu of a warmer “big city” design. The renovation features woodwork, vanilla and dark chocolate accents and the new E5 Lounge on the first floor, which serves tapas. 904 Fifth Ave., 619-239-1800.
Seafood and whites
Veteran “all whites” winemaker Christian Roguenant of Edna Valley presents his entire Tangent portfolio for a six-course seafood dinner at 6:30 p.m., August 16, at the Wine Vault & Bistro. Reservations are required. 3731-A India St., 619-295-3939.
